gem & rebso's travels
My turn to write!
Yes, I'm still here... I was meant to fly home yesterday but the lure of a week's diving with Kev from Payar was just too irrestible. And also, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to see how the wonderful island of Phi Phi is doing in its recovery process from the tsunami. Gem and I were both here last year and both desperately wanted to come back.
The island's doing well, there's alot of construction going on and all the volunteering projects have been wrapped up: all the workers here now are Thai workers brought in from the mainland. Huge areas of the island have been rebuilt although there is some debate as to whether planning permission has been obtained or not. We're hopefully going on a walk up to the viewpoint tomorrow to see how it looks from above. Gem took a photo last year so it'll be interesting to compare.
To keep ourselves busy in this little piece of paradise, I've been doing alot of diving and Gem's been doing alot of birdwatching: we're both happy!
We've got a lovely little house which we've mozzie-proofed with the aid of Gem's Micropore tape and only just discovered that 4 on the fan is actually the slowest speed: we've been boiling for the last 2 nights!! We are quite bright really.... Honest!
The diving here is great: said hello to all the fishies and saw a huge octopus and cuttle fish yesterday. I've even volunteered to do a fish lecture to the Dive Masters in the diving school that Kev teaches at: just got to remember them all now!
I took part in the opening ceremony of the underwater memorial that has been put down for victims of the tsunami: very poignant moment if a bit strange seeing plaques underwater. It always makes me think how very, very lucky we all were on Payar.
Right, we're now going to brave the rain and go back to our lovely little room for an early night. Hope all's well back home, I've only got 6 days left so see you all soon.
Loads of love!
