So onto another country. It seems weird saying that after only 4 nights in Singapore especially as we have spent 10 weeks in one place previousley. We chose Melaka for its heritage as an old trading port. Owned by the Dutch, then the Portuguise and then us, it seemed like an interesting place and only a few hours away. It is only a small place so we felt confident we could get around it in a couple of days. Well it has every museum going and we could'nt possibly go in them all even if we wanted.
We first chose the historical museum to give us an idea of malaysian history. It was housed in the oldest dutch building in Melaka and was really interesting, it gave us an idea of the order things happened and how this small port has got so many influences. This can be seen by all the different types and styles of buildings everywhere. We then went to the top of the hill where there are ruins of St Pauls church, that was left by the portugese. From here we had a great view of Melaka and the sea.
We also visited the beauty and Maritime museums, the former we are not sure what it had to do with Melaka but anyway we gave it a go. In the evening we gatecrashed a birthday party at the resturant we were eating. We joined in with singing happy birthday which they sang in English first and then their own language second and we were'nt allowed to leave until we had a slice of Birthday cake each. Well at least pudding did'nt have to come out of the budget at this meal!
Melaka just about finished Matthew decided to ring for a room in Kuala Lumpur. We had heard it can very busy being another city, so we went and found a phone in a new shopping complex. The pay phone had internet and was very easy to use except when you wanted to speak into the receiver. The wire was not long enough to reach his ear and you maybe able to see matthew stooped over trying to speak on the photos. Melaka must be full of small people!
Kuala Lumpur next stop!
