After a good nights sleep we rise early on Sunday to check out of the Lotus Resort. We had to catch a boat today to Koh Phangan for the full moon party. After being picked up and thrown into the back of a pick-up truck, we were then dropped off at the port. We had to try to get ourselves onto the Songserm express boat, which before hand hadn't been a problem when we had pre-bought tickets. However this time it wasn't so easy, the problem was that the tour operator we booked through didn't call the transport agency to request our places on the boat. This also happened to 100's of other people, who were also trying to get onto this boat. It was up to the captain of the ship to allow only a few on. So as you can guess there was a bit of a fight for those places, so the elbows came out. Lucky for us we were the last four to get onto the boat. After all we were the first on the scene at the port, but in those conditions that didn't matter, It was every man for himself.
On the boat it was rather rough, we were seated right at the back on a bench. As the boat rolled from side to side over the waves so did we. Slipping and sliding up and down the bench. Row and Lil were feeling the sea sickness, unlike myself and Izzy, I do love boat trips no matter how mad they are!
Eventually we got to Koh Phanan. We got onto a taxi and it was the same as always, "Where you go? You have place to stay, I have cheap cheap for you!" Just like all the other's! We looked at one of the "cheap cheap" places, no its not cheap, its not close, and yes I will take that taxi ride into Haad Rin your offering thanks. This was our second trip to the island, but it was a little different this time as we hadn't book ahead for accommodation. All the guest houses were full or had stupid price tags on them. This was also on the outskirts of Hadd rinn town, so we were not hopefull about finding somewhere in Haad Rin. We had no choice but to try the centre though, and to our surprise we managed to pick up a nice little bargain. A sweet centraly located bungalow for 400 baht. This is almost unheard of for this time of the month. The lady must have taken pity on us as we did look, like.... well..... not rolling in the money lets say.
The evening was spent having a little stroll around the town looking at various shops, as this is what women do best, and being with three of them I did this quite alot. Food was soon a hot topic as like myself Row also gets a little grumpy when she needs feeding. We took them to a bargain eatery simply called "Good Food - Cheap Price!" we found it on our first visit here, everything is 50 baht, cheap and good food just as we all like it!
On Monday we strolled around the town in the morning and spent the afternoon on the beach. In the evening we introduced ourselves to the boys in the Bungalows opposite ours, and went to the all you can eat BBQ with them. It was the same set up as we had in Siem Riep. You have a special pan on a ring in the middle of your own table, with a BBQ section on the top and soup round the edges. You cook meats on the BBQ and noodles and vegetables in the soup. Me and Lil were a dab hand at this by now, but everyone else got themselves in a right burnt old mess.
It was an early morning on Tuesday for us, we got up around about 9am. Izzy had already been out for her morning run. She had got alot of abuse from drunken revelers on their way home, Koh Phangan was the only place she had been called whilst running. We decide to try this breakfast place out which in time was to be our local breakfast hang out. After our bellys were fuelled up we hit the road.
We decided to go look for ATV'S to hire (All Terrain Vehicles or 4 wheel drive Quad bikes). We found some that were 150cc. We rented two between the four of us for the day. They looked mean but the hills soon brought them down to size, as with two people on them they did struggle a bit.
We decided to zoom our way around the island and try to see as much as possible. Waterfalls were first on our list of things to see, which turned out to be quite dissapointing! We did however make it fun for ourselves. We parked up the bikes and headed up to the top. We turned our noses up at the pathway and began climbing up the waterfalls! They werent big so we thought it would be fun. In the end it was not such a brilliant idea, especially in flip flops, so we returned to the path. Here our next destination was soon to be revealed to us. There was a sign for a viewpoint which turned out to be a mighty trek uphill. The views were worth the sweat and tears and the red faces, hahaha.
Next on the to do list was the Chinese temple! Which was nice, but still weve been in China. We have seen alot of temples but we stopped off so Izzy and Row could see. We decided to take the coastal road back to catch some good views and a cool sea breeze, if it exsisted. The whole day went without a hitch, until . . . . . . SLAM! Row and Izzy crash into the back of us! I had stopped so Lil could get a picture of something, but I think I stopped a little quick and they didnt stop quick enough. Lucky for us nothing was broken. While on our route back we had taken some pictures of the biggest yang tree (I still dont know what a Yang tree is but it was big), and also tried to climb a stupid long and steep hill on the all powerfull ATV! but once again the hill defeated us, All terrain my ass!
That evening we took the ATV's back and headed to a falafal place that we had scoped out. This thing was heaven in a pitta bread! and the banana milk shakes were amazing too. We Had to get an early night as it was going to be a long day tomorow, the full moon party was less than 24 hours away.
