Tuesday 26th St John's, Antigua

St John's is the largest city and capital of Antigua and Barbuda. St John's has a population of around 22,000 - the majority of which are of African descent - and the official language is English.

Many years ago we visited with our friends Joyce and Richard and went to Nelson's Dockyard.

We arrived early morning to discover three other large ships in port. P&O Brittania, Costa Magica and a German ship called something like Aida ? That meant St John's suddenly had 10,000 extra inhabitants!!!!

Our tour today Circles Antigua by Sea was in a large cruiser, which took on board passengers from our ship, any of the others in port as well as independent holiday makers - we think about 100 or more in all. The crew were very attentive bringing around a variety of drinks at regular intervals. No rum punch until after we had the beach break. A commentator pointed out all points of interest on the coast as we "sailed" past. Then we were warned it was going to be rough for at least 15 minutes as we turned east past the reefs. And it was! Fortunately where we were sitting we did not got very wet but so many did!

As we beached on Green Island, those going snorkelling were issued with all there gear and given detailed briefing instructions. We headed to a little cove and made use of the rocks for seating. The sea was great to swim in, not cold and there were some small fish keeping us company.

Lunch was a barbecue - prepared by the crew on the back of the boat - of chicken, fish, rice, pasta and salad. Very tasty.

On leaving Green Island, the drinks included rum punch! On our return trip we slowly went around Falmouth Bay to see all the mega yachts in harbour - wow!

Back on board at 3.30 pm, having had a brilliant day with plenty of sun, exhilarating trip around the island and not burnt!

Last port of call is Dominica and then Thursday, Barbados and home!
