London, UK to Bakewell, UK. To begin our fantastical journey into the Scottish highlands, both Liz and I took the Friday afternoon off, jumped in the mini, and set out of London to beat the traffic. Our plan was to get a few hours out of town and camp in the picturesque Peaks District. The first few hours of the trip we thought we had beaten the system, only to be stuck in motorway traffic for two hours, only 30 minutes from our destination! Bummer!
Persisting into the night, we arrived at campsite #1 (Greenhills Holiday Park, Bakewell) at about 9pm, to be greeted by soggy fields and rain. It was not the weather that started to dampen the spirits, it was our unfamiliarity with the tent (kindly on loan from the Mark James Collection) that meant 30 minutes, and several panicky phone calls later, we had shelter. Comfort in the cold.
