After spending 10 days in the tranquil setting of the Galapagos islands it was a bit of a culture shock to arrive back in the city, this time Guayaquil which has a reputation for being hot and violent (our room had a TV and on it we watched the local news regarding a shooting in the city captured on CCTV shown repeatedly). It is the Ecuador`s largest city and economic powerhouse, tourism is not high on its agenda. We were really only in the town as the choice of flights from the Galapagos islands were back to Quito or to Guayaquil, which is further south - where we needed to be in order to exit into Peru. A lot of work has been done in Guayaquil over the last few years to make it more friendly including the entire redevelopment of the waterfront and the revamping of Las Peñas which is an artistic district. Both of which we visited, they were perfectly fine civic centres but there was nothing remarkable about either of them. We kept ourselves pretty much to ourselves being the only guests staying in our hostel and not daring to venture out in the evening. It was a relief to catch the cruz del sur bus that would take us 27 hours across the border and onto Lima, Peru.
