I knew it was a long way to today's destination, and intended to go via the A-1223 to Granen. Unfortunately got confused shortly after leaving Monzon, and headed South instead of West. Even when I realised I had gone wrong I stupidly persisted, thinking I could take a smaller road to rejoin my planned route. But there was a big river to my right, with no crossing until Albalate de Cinca. So this added at least 20km to an already long day. Thankfully the roads were quiet and well surfaced, except for a horrible 7km section between Granen & Tardienta, where the surfacing had been stripped. This slowed me down a lot, and removed the cooling effect of the wind. The main effect was that my feet started to burn where the SPD cleats conducted the sun's heat - I had to pour some of my drinking water into my shoes to cool them! Some time later I had a very welcome large beer at a motorway service station (junction of A-23 and A-1209). (Yes they sell alcohol at m/w stations in Spain!) After that there were some serious hills round Gurrea de Gallego, so I didn't arrive at the Hotel Sekia till 9pm, well after dark! It was a nice modern hotel but took a bit of finding as it was in an odd location in a business park 3km West of town. The manager Jose Biel was also head cook & bottle washer. I had phoned ahead at about 6pm and told Jose in my best Spanish (not very good!) that I was going to be late, and would want a dinner. Thank goodness this was Spain and not France, as late dinners are the norm in Spain, and Jose cooked a good meal. 173km today, so I decided to have a shorter day tomorrow! Jose suggested that Sos del Rey Catolicos was worth visiting, so I prebooked a room there.
