We arrived at Jorge Chavez International Airport at 6:30 am. We noticed during our various taxi rides in Peru that there is no chance anyone will let you in if you try to change lanes. It is a game of chicken where there is very little between each car. I had to close my eyes many a time.
We had two hours before our plane left for Santiago and we needed 1 hour and 45 minutes of it to drop off our bags, go through security and get to our gate! No breakfast for us.
Anthony was very excited because we flew on the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. I must say I thought it was a good improvement. The lighting is like the colours at dawn, pale violet and orange. Anthony told me this was designed to be more relaxing and reduce jet lag. I certainly found it to be very pleasant. And the windows. They don't have pull down shades, but controlled electrochromic shading. They are 65% bigger and you can see out the windows when sitting in the middle of the plane. The internal design is a lot roomier with the ceiling of the plane arching to look higher and the overhead lockers are bigger.
As we started to descend into Chile, we were flying at the level of the snow capped mountain range. As we looked out the window at 4,000 metres we were entranced by the view.
Once we landed in Santiago Anthony was chuffed to see a sign in the airport arrivals area with an Australian flag. He wasn't so chuffed when he discovered why. "Reciprocal fee" for Australians. US$117 each to enter the country! That's more than the accommodation costs for our three bedroom apartment for two nights!
We checked in and had a wander around town. The residents don't seem to speak as much English as they did in Peru, but we managed. We had an empanada for afternoon tea (we hadn't had lunch) and a little bedraggled stray looked at as lovingly. We didn't feed him, but he took an instant liking to Anthony and followed him for three blocks.
Our apartment is right in the centre of town and our host supplied fruit, bread, butter, coffee, tea and a bottle of Chilean red wine. Very nice. We settled in to our last country quite easily!
