So after an uncomfortable night of noisy Friday night revellers (you'd think I'd learn!), I had some corn flakes Anthony bought from the local corner store and did some hand washing to (hopefully) last the rest of the trip.
We left the apartment late in the morning and took off towards the Chain Bridge and the Buda Castle. It was extremely humid and uncomfortable. I'm not one to sweat, but my forehead had beads of sweat from the humidity and I was acutely aware of the nylon backing of the backpack.
Anthony thought he might check out costs and availability of a trip down the river so he approached a boat moored at the rivers edge. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the boat he approached was one of the river cruises that travelled the length of the river and not a short lunch time trip!
While crossing the bridge, Anthony received a tip from a local tourist advisor to avoid the funicular to get up to the castle and just walk a few hundred metres further left and travel up an escalator. Bewdie, saves money and time.
We walked along the Danube and found the lift up one level to the escalator. Just our luck, it was out of operation and we had to struggle up the 100+ stairs instead. Once we got to the top we stopped for a breather and then walked along the top path that edged the castle. The view down to Buda, the Danube and across to Pest was almost worth the climb!
After a few photos taking in the beauty of the buildings we stopped for lunch. As we sat there enjoying our Hungarian panini (!) the grey sky became much darker and then the storm struck. There was a thunder and lightening show for us to enjoy while we had lunch under shelter.
The rain poured down and I checked the F1 timetable for Anthony. Oops, the qualifying was on in 15 minutes, not the one hour 15 minutes he thought. We separated, he returned to the apartment and the TV, while I went to the Castle museum.
Well I didn't mind getting wet, but I was beyond wet! I only walked about 300 metres to the museum, but I had to stand at the entrance and squeeze out my hair and top. I was literally wringing wet and had to keep returning to the entrance to squeeze out the water before I could even contemplate entering the museum.
I wandered around the museum which showed the history of the castle, which has been on the site in various forms since medieval times. For me, one of the most amazing parts was the opportunity to travel down into the bowels of the castle to see various areas, including the cellars and chapel, that have been discovered in a number of archaeological digs. They also have on display a medieval appliqué that was discovered recently balled up in mud at the bottom of a well.
I returned to the apartment and changed into some drier clothes. We walked just a short way to the square in front of St Stephens Basilica. Anthony was impressed with the building and felt it was the best church he'd seen, so we picked a cafe overlooking the building for dinner.
As the sun set and the evening lights appeared in the city we decided we might take a bicycle tour, but none of the ATMs we tried worked, so we relied on shanks pony. We walked back down our street to the Chain Bridge where we were able to see the city lights up and down the river highlighting all the principal buildings. Gorgeous evening.
