Test Run
Arriving on Fraser Island after dark meant we didn't have an overview of the resort until the next day when we woke to find our room overlooking a lagoon & most of the buildings raised on stilts. Spending most of the next day on a ranger guided 4wheel drive bus tour of some of this huge sand island was filled with lots to learn & enjoy. It was quite a surprise to me that there's so much forest over the sand with a few freshwater lakes, sand blows & of course the fabulous 75 mile beach. First stop was Eli Creek where Geoff & a couple of others floated & swam down the creek to the beach just because you can!!!! Further along this enormous beach we took the opportunity to take a 15 minute flight over the sea, the sand, the forest & the lakes coming in over the wreck to land again on the beach. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience - brilliant! The wreck of the Maheno is a beautiful sight & an interesting story - sold to Japan for scrap in 1935 it was hit by a severe storm while being towed north & was pushed onto the sand where it still sits. I was struck by how lucky this was as it might have been used for Japanese weapons during WW2! Took off at quite a pace - 80km speed limit heading south, sometimes through the waves to our lunch stop at Eurong Beach Resort then inland again to Central Station for a walk through the forest beside a creek with the clearest, silent water. Our last stop was at Lake McKenzie for a swim in the beautiful pristine water & softest sand - so good for the skin. Sunset cheese platter beside the pier rounded off a great day on Fraser Island - another place to return to sometime for more forest & ocean experiences.
