Little Chloe's intrepid traveller guide!
Hello everyone!!Once again its been a long time i know . . . . but i have my reasons!! First i was really sick with altitude sickness, only like just fully recovering! Although now my wisdom teeth are coming thro which is a tad on the painful side, its never ending i tell u!
Just got back from a 3day salt flats tour- so this is the reason for my tardiness!
Friday; What a crazy day!!!! We ended up (me, Nione and Danella), taking a taxi from Sucre to Potosi, as it was only 1pound more and 'supposedly'alot quicker. Took a while bargaining with the taxis, then this mad woman came over asking if we wanted to go to potosi, whilst having different conversations with about 4 other people simultaneously, literally grabbed our bags 'helping us' to the car. . . she said it would be 40bolivianos each so we agreed.
Got in dodgy looking car, accompanied by equally dodgy looking driver.
About 5 minutes in, he decided we should stop for snacks. This was ok. Except another 5 minutes later he stopped to splash water on his face coz 'he felt tired'. Then we stopped for lunch . . . . started to get a bit annoyed at him at this point so i started having a go at him in spanish. Drove on again, at about 90mph once more on the cliff tops, with bits of road just randomly missing wherever it had fallen thro.
(Think he was also a bit of a social outcast- every donkey/llama/sheep/dog that we went past which was dead in the road - and there were ALOT- he called amigo, and laughed.Scary.)
Ended up convincing him that Danella should drive- even tho she didnt have her licence with her! He didnt care anyway, he was absolutely off his face on something . . . . So she drove the rest of the way while he slept in the back!!
When we got to potosi we refused to pay him 40 each (me arguing again in spanish!) Ended up giving him 20each, then just ran away and jumped in another taxi!!
As soon as we got there we decided to do a mine tour, thought this would be fine. Went to the miners market and almost passed out, but carried on.
Then we bought dynamite and set it off- was bloody scary!!Whole ground shook, but its completely legal for anyone in Bolivia to buy dynamite!!Madness . . . . Got all my gear on and went down these tiny, congested, dirty mines where its boiling hot and you cant breathe properly with all the fumes. I cant believe people do this every day. Martin- i hope you dont work with mines like this!! decided it was all too much and literally ran to the top! Had a sleep, got back to our hostel, felt like there was a vice on my head, was sick several times, didnt really move for the rest of the day. . .
Saturday: we got a bus to Uyuni, arrived at like 2am, and nowhere would open for us! So we ended up staying in this rather skanky residential, with 16 flies in the room- i counted- a bare lightbulb on the ceiling, skanky sheets, and a door that wouldnt close!
Next day was better stayed in a nicer hostel and booked our salt plains tour. Not much else to say really!!
Sunday: A couple of girls that i met in Brazil (from england-woo!), came down to uyuni, and me, danella, nione, maria- from germany, and millie and sarah- from england started our tour!! It cost $US60 for four days!!!Inc. food, accomadation, driver, cook- (who dont speak any english- i was translator!), and the jeep!!! So crazy! First you go on the salt plains. Took some random pictures- sorry mark - saw the hotel of salt, shockingly called so, as it was made out of salt! Its the biggest salt plains in the world, and its so weird when youre driving coz thats all you see- white for ages. Then we went to isla pescado, which is in the middle of the salt plains but is an island covered in cacti- Crazy. . . . .
The rest of the days were a bit of a blur!! Saw LOADS of amazingly gorgeous lagunas, flamengos, mountains, thermal springs all in the middle of nowhere. Ive taken loads of pictures but they dont do them justice.
Our accomadation wasnt great- literally in the middle of nowhere, no internet!! Nothing. Was all a bit dodgy, lights went off at about 10pm and didnt come on again till about 7pm, so u cant see anything!! And u can imagine what its like when uve got 6 girls together . . . Even tho we were made to get up at the ungodly hours of 5 and 6 . . ! No showers, u have to flush your own toilet . . . those were the days . . .
Weather here is mad, one minute its roasting, the next its freezing. Was so cold at dinner time that we sit round the dining table in a long 2 fleeces, gloves, boots and hats. Up until now, hadnt changed my clothes for the last 3 days coz it was too cold. lol!
So now theres a whole group of us, and tonight we're off to Oruro -on train- i refuse to take any more dodgy life threatening buses!! Then catching a bus straight from Oruro up to La Paz!woo . . should be exciting.
Will keep u all updated! (well ill try)
Much love,
Chloe xxx
