My Big Adventure
So my opinion of Melbourne has now been changed!! We woke up early-ish after not the greatest night's sleep as I kept hearing the train. We got up and headed next door for breakfast and the yummiest hot chocolate! After breakfast we headed up to our room to get ready for our departure to Ramsey Street, I was actually going to see where Neighbours is filmed (I cannot tell you how excited I am by this as this was actually the only reason I wanted to come to Melbourne - sad but true!). Anyway our bus arrived so we headed to the outskirts of Melbourne and Pin Oak Ct aka Ramsey Street. When we arrived it was just like I had imagined it but also totally different. The houses were just as you see them and you could imagine wandering up the road to meet Kyle and Susan and Toadie but on the other hand it was so much smaller than it looks. How you can play a game of cricket in the street I'm not sure. So after taking a ridiculous number of photos and walking round thinking I am actually in Ramsey Street we jumped back in the bus and headed for the studios (an extra which we weren't expecting). As we arrived at the studio we headed to Grease Monkeys, Fitzgerald's garage and the Handy Woman. We also saw the bus stop, prison and Erinsborough High. After taking another ridiculous amount of shots we got to meet an ex-star from the show - Stingray who left the show about 8 years ago - Ben Nicholas. So after chatting to him and having another photo and getting his autograph we were driven round to Lassiters, Paul's penthouse suite and of course the Lassiters lake. Now technically this area was closed today so we snuck in on the bus but weren't allowed to get off!! We then continued our tour to see the entrance to the hospital, the Backpackers, Community Centre and the back of Erinsborough High! This sadly ended our tour and we headed back to our hotel but it was definitely a highlight of my trip to Melbourne! When we arrived back to got a spot of lunch before heading out on the tram to St Kilda. When we arrived at St Kilda it instantly reminded me of Hastings and an English seaside resort. We walked down to and along the beach, along the Esplanade and on to the pier. As we walked along the pier we saw a sign about a little penguin colony so thought we might as well wander along to see on the off chance if we could see anything. And would you believe it but what did we see straight away swimming in the water - a penguin, a real life wild little penguin in the sea! I was so very excited (now I get so excited seeing a green woodpecker or buzzard so you can only imagine how excited I was to see this). So we continued to look but with no success we headed back down to the esplanade for an ice cream and decided that if the penguins were due in at dusk we would pop back down to see if we were in luck and could see any more. Well we really weren't quite prepared for what we did see. There he was a little penguin sitting on the boardwalk posing for photos. Add to this penguins swimming in the sea, cormorants, terns diving for fish in the water, starfish, jelly fish, a black swan, shoveler ducks and a rakali (a sea rat with a very long tail - it looked a little like an otter) my excitement was beyond excited. And this was before the real action started, little penguins swimming in and running up the beach, climbing on the rocks, calling to their pals. A totally amazing experience and this is before we actually see the penguins at Phillip Island. So after all the action (probably 2-3 hours in total) we decided we were going to head home and as we walked along the promenade we noticed a shoal of fish and then what should we see but a massive stingray swimming alongside us about a metre wide! Feeling so very excited by all our wildlife findings we grabbed a quick bite to eat before catching the tram back to our hostel. I can't quite believe the different wildlife we have seen today and that it was all properly wild. I now can't wait to see what tomorrow might bring!! And did I mention I went to Ramsey Street?
