We spent one more night back in Manaus. We had booked quite a fancy hotel that we found online with a lovely king sized bed, for the same price as a room in a hostel! After our jungle lodge with no air con, and sometimes no power or running water, this was a real treat.
As our flight wasn't until the afternoon from Manaus, we planned to sleep in as long as possible. Unfortunately, this was made impossible after a few rather loud explosions at around 5.30am. As they sounded quite distant we didn't worry too much, but when a siren approached and sounded like it stopped nearby, Lindsay decided to have a peek out the window.
Across the road from our hotel a combi van was ablaze, lighting up the whole area with large flames! Not a sight we expected! The firemen had arrived and were hosing it down while a bunch of people gathered in the street to watch on (why were they all out at 5.30am?). It was very exciting, but this left us struggling to get back to sleep, ruining our anticipated luxurious sleep in.

Jane So do you have an emergency plan if you need to exit your accommodation in the middle of the night, being woken from a deep sleep? This happened to us on our first night arriving in London in winter. Most people in the street didn't even have coats to keep them warm. We had coats, passports and money.
