Ben & Zella's travels
Hello all
We have had a mammoth journey in getting here to the Caneron highlands. We set off from Ao Nang at 6:30 Monday morning in a minibus to Hat Yai where we were led to believe we could get a connecting bus to the Cameron Highlands. This turned out to be false information but instead wer got on another minibus to Butterworth which is in Malaysia next to Penang. When we arrived here we were told if we got a bus to Ipoh that we could get another bus to CH and that the busses ran till at least 8pm. We then arrived at Ipoh at about 7:30 to be told that the last bus leaves at 5!
After a lot of travelling (10 hours +) and even more cursing, our introduction to Malay people was not favourable.
We then decided to stay the night in Ipoh rather than spend a fortune on a taxi to CH. We stayed the night with a Finnish guy called Billy that we had picked up on en route. We stayed in the centre of Ipoh and had just had a chinese and got back to the guesthouse when we had a powercut, what an end to the day.
The next day a taxi picked us up for the 8AM bus, we arrived at the bus station only to be told that the first bus actually leaves at 11:30! I got chatting to a couple of taxi drivers who told me that a bus left from the other bus station at 8:30, so we took another taxi to the other bus station only to see the bus we needed to get on drive past us. The bus leaft at 8 not 8:30, again after a lot of cursing we had to wait 3 hours at the dodgiest bus station ever, Zella and i are currently sporting Delhi belly and holes in floors with no loo roll are not a pleasent experience to say the least. oh and you have to pay for the privilege of these conveniences.
After a few games of cards with Billy we got on the 3 hour bus ride up into the mountains to CH. When we arrived we quickly realised the journey was worth it! Very pituresque. We checked into our guest house called Fathers which has nissan huts for dorms.
On the Wednesday we hired a scooter so that we could tear up the highway. We went to a strawberry farm, cactus ranch, temple, olde english smoke house, tea plantation cafe and finally a mock tudor hotel overlooking a lake.
During this sojourn on our hog we experienced some monsoon weather and proceeded to get very wet. When we returned to the guesthouse we watched a movie and chilled.
This morning we headed off on the Boh plantation tour and a walk through the mossy forest. Here Zella managed to swing through the trees to avoid the mud whilst i reverted to my childhood and splashed around in all the puddles. We went to the highest point in the CH to see the spectacular views but unfortunately it was pissing it down and the clouds obscured it.
On the Boh plantation tour we saw how they made the tea and the history of the scottish company which produces enough tea for 5.5 million cups daily. They had a fantastic cafe overlooking the plantation where we had a cuppa and chocolate cake.
On the way back to the guesthouse we stopped at the butterfly farm which houses hundreds of butterflies along with purdy flowers, snakes, beetles, scorpions and other insects.
This capped off a perfect day and we are now headed of for a nice indian meal to help soothe our tummies and tomorrow we head off early to Kuala Lumpur.
Till next time, adios
