Friday's fun-filled frolics!!
We've been up to a fair bit since the last entry...so here goes!!
Arrived in Puno finally after the 12 hour delay in Cusco (Puno is on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca). Took a boat trip out to the floating islands of Uros. These islands are so amazing, they were created by the natives centuries ago to escape the Spanish conquistadores. They're made entirely of reeds which are constantly added to to keep the island afloat. The huts, boats, everything seem to be made out of reeds. Very pretty. We were travelling with an english couple we met on the Inca trail (Sally and Martyn). We didn't stay long in Puno and the four of us took a bus the next day to Copacabana (on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca).
Copacabana was a very small but very pretty little town. We tried the local trout and kingfisher - absolutely gorgeous. Spent most of the time chilling out, sat on the bay watching the sunset. Dave decked himself out with some new clothes/hat/bag etc...
From Copacabana Martyn and Sal went back to Peru and Dave and I went on to La Paz (the unofficial 2nd capital of Bolivia). La Paz was pretty cool (huge compared to Copacabana, and packed with people everywhere) - unfortunately some guy tried to mug us on the first day there - but speedy Dave chased after him and nothing was lost. Did a mountain bike ride down what's known as 'Death Road'. 45km and 3600metres downhill along some pretty hairy roads! The crosses by the roadside and remains of fallen trucks down the 1000 foot drop beside us didn't inspire much confidence! But we made it, and the scenery was awesome. Oh yeah and Dave bought himself a new blue guitar for about 15 quid - very nice.
From La Paz, took 12 hour bus journey to Uyuni in the south of Bolivia for a 3 day 4wd tour into the world's largest Salt Flats. It was pretty amazing, they just went on forever! Saw muchos Llamas, flamingoes and other desert like animals in the nature reserve too.
After a 10 hour bus ride we arrived in Sucre last night, the official capital of Boliva. It's a great city, a complete change from the mud huts and dusty, bumpy roads of Uyuni. It seems very sophisticated and the white-washed buildings in the centre make it look beautiful in the sunshine.
Right, I think that's enough for now...check out the latest photos :-)
