FARFRUMWURKEN
Today we woke up to snow and road closures. What does it take, are these a.m. weather disasters destined to follow us the entire way. We scanned the internet, watched the T.V., even considered one more day at this great hotel. But NO I thought, I'm originally from Ontario - I can do this, so we left at 8:30 heading down 285S and then onto I40 East.
I went out to load the luggage into the back and cab of the truck and got prepared to wipe off the snow when I thought - geez that window looks pretty clear - that's because it was. Deb had rolled down the window to help me back this monstrous rig into position for the night and "forgot" to roll up the window and lock the door - about 4" inside the cab - but all in all no other issues.
I plugged in the GPS and found that we've gone from a British female voice to a male voice - must have been the cold. A couple of days it changed back - strange.
On the road we made good with our mileage expectations, crossing through four (4) states - New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and finally into Arkansas. Based on the fact that our last leg of our trip was going to be 12 hours or so, we decided to go past Oklahoma City and decided to boogie on to Fort Smith, Arkansas which would cut about 3 hours off the final leg.
Tom, driving across the panhandle of Texas near Amarillo we past the world's LARGEST wind farm. This farm consisted of over 627 towering wind turbines that generate a full capacity of 781 megawatts - enough to power 230,000 homes. This was a 1 billion $ project. So much for wind power eh Tom.
Historic Route 66 highway has run side-by-side with us all the way from Nevada. This small, windy road has little to zero traffic with business after business that has shut down and fallen into disrepair. The number of pictures for today are pretty limited, mainly because the PANHANDLE of Texas is as flat as a pool table and there was little if anything of any interest, particularly from the jump seat of a 65 mph UHaul truck.
We finally had our first Cracker Barrel fix for the trip - Bob ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Deb went with the usual - Grilled Cheese and potato casserole. What a deal CB - we've missed you.
From the start of our trip till now we've travelled through (nine) states - Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and finally tonight Arkansas. So at 10:30 p.m after a long day of driving we pulled into the Courtyard Marriott in Fort Smith, Arkansas and fell deep asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow. Tomorrow is the final day (Day 6) ad we'll make the final dash to Keli and Joe's.
