NOT TO BE SERVED, BUT TO SERVE
Today was a "free to rest" day. Spent the morning reading and relaxing. Exchanged some money this afternoon. Decided to go with Pastor Jairo to a weekly bible study at the home of 'Rosa' this afternoon at 4:30pm. We took a one-hour bus ride to the southern part of Bogotá, followed by a second 20-minute bus ride.
I told Pastor Jairo that I understood about one-fourth of what was said at the bible study, but that was only because I don't know how to say "one-twentieth" in Spanish. I did understand that the bible study had to do with the passage in the Gospel of Mark where Jesus tells his disciples the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve. Even if I didn't understand much of the conversation, I am coming to understand these words of Jesus more fully through the generous hospitality I have received in the last 24 hours.
Pictured here are the folks who gathered this afternoon at the home of 'Rosa' in the southern part of Bogotá for fellowship, study, prayer and of course coffee and a sweet roll.
Tomorrow Pastor Jairo and I take a bus about three hours north from Bogotá to Pastor Jairo's hometown of Sogamoso. We'll stay one night with his parents and also see some sights. Expect photos to follow.

Kim Hey Pastor Kent, Who had the tougher travel day--Pastor Kent flying to Bogota or Elisabeth driving across state with a one year old and four year old? And now that you are being immersed in the Spanish language how many stars would you give the Rosetta Stone progam (five stars being the best)? Will you be preaching in Spanish as Pastor Jairo did in English? I remember he used big words like "metamorphosis". Enjoy, enjoy!
Kent Actually, Elisabeth had a wonderful passenger who helped a LOT with traveling across the state. We were both fortunate to have good, safe travels. And I would probably give the Rosetta Stone program four (out of five) stars. It really was quite helpful. There are plenty of times when my brain simply "shuts down" and I have no idea what is being said. However, I'm able to ask questions and have some conversation with Pastor Jairo (he's quite patient with me!). But alas, no. I won't be preaching in Spanish as Pastor Jairo did in English! Pastor Jairo informed me that one of the Lutheran World Federation participants from Germany will be preaching at San Pablo Lutheran my last Sunday. He's not sure yet if he'll need to translate from German or English or if the person will preach in Spanish!
