Let me take you back to Monday morning, neither of us had slept well probably a combination of nerves and excitement from the anticipation of what was ahead of us. After an eventful breakfast where I miss took a soft boiled egg for a hard one and didn't realise until i started peeling it! We were ready to hop into the car to go to the homestay. It was the same guide that took us to Angkor wat. This was the start of journey to travel south through Cambodia. We left at 7:30 and got to the homestay about 2:30 and there were some giggles on the way :) Including the tour group of Chinese tourists who we're practicing their model poses at every opportunity at the temple, with full make up dressed to the nines and in all honesty they probably were not going to be at the top of vogues contact list ! This would have been fine had we not been behind them trying to take more subtle pics :) other giggles included the single sheet we were given to share at the homestay and a conversation about is it ok to eat meat with no name?!
So anyway I digress we travelled 90 mins to a temple site - nice toilets tick. It was called Beng Malea we got some nice pics and tried to copy the chinese "models" but just couldnt quite match them. It cost us $5 each to go in.
After this we travelled another 80 mins and went to Spean Kambor Or an old bridge,I probably should tell you the year but I don't remember! the guide mentioned at this point that he wanted us to see it, but it was actually already on our itinerary ! It was a climb to get to the river but we managed it and it was good although the fun bit was watching the drivers car squeeze through the barriers. I should mention at this point the condition of the roads "red snow"'everywhere. There are no traffic rules and the roads outside of the cities are not made of tarmac. It is all red dust ok in a car but not on a tuck tuck - more about that later! Sometimes we would hit an un expected bump and other times we would meet some cows! Fortunately we were in the back of the car with our bottles of water and cold towels - nice :)
I should mention before I forget but every accom and excursion you get free water so if you plan it right you dont have to buy any. However if you want a soft drink it tends to be a dollar.
After the bridge we went on to another this is where we encountered our first squat loo! And we paid a dollar between us for the privilege, the family who own that house must live like kings :) Not much to report on the bridge it broke the journey up. And then about 1pm we arrived in Kampong Thom where the exchange happened we switched from the air con car to a tuck tuck ! We had lunch here a bit like a transport cafe normal price $4 a meal the waitresses were v attentive and stayed v close! The lunch plan wasnt explained on the itinerary so we had a big breakky but still had room for the lunch.
Talking of the itinerary they said we would arrive about 10 ooops ! So time to board the tuck tuck, we thought he said a 10 min journey but no it went on for an hour! We learnt the phase tuck tuck dancing :) as we were bumped around!
I am going to stop here and publish this sorry for the delay we have been starved of wifi which i loved! More to follow about the home stay - which was amazing :)
