4:30am the alarm went off today, our intention being to enjoy a peaceful, tranquil sunrise at Angkor Wat. The breakfast pack up from the hotel was fab in a cute little basket, the downside being that we had to carry it with us all day - well our lovely guide did! But the contents of it was lovely.
We set off to the temple at 5 and headed straight to the ticket booth and so it would seem did 1000 other tourists! There was about 1% of us with blonde hair so our guide could be confident he wasnt going to lose us! In case you were wondering there were a lot of Asians and selfie sticks.
It took 20 mins to pay our $20 fee and they took our photos. We then waited on the bank of the lake to watch the sun rise along with a lot of other people! This ruined the spiritual feeling of the temple but was still good to see. We had decided to air on the side of caution and cover our shoulders and knees and were glad we did.
For a few hours we wandered around the temples we had our favourites the North Gate at Ta prohm and this whole area, it was just a bit to busy. The detail on the walls and the carvings were amazing. We headed back to the hotel in time for lunch after hearing how our guide used to be a Buddist Monk and how some of his other guests bought water filters for the villagers of the floating village. The guide and driver were great and they gave us the confidence to wander out on our own this evening. The people of Siem Reap are so desperate for tourists they say it is safe. We learnt about the different wars today too all very horrid.
So for the rest of the afternoon we lay by the pool had a swim and a snooze! We even booked to see the circus tomorrow night. We ate out this evening and it was $10 for 2xmains and 2x starters and one water and one beer. V cheap :)
The markets were all selling the same stuff and not all that great. So tomorrow is a day of rest as we prepare to move on. We did very well finding our way around Siem Reap today we may do it again tomorrow!
