Our second visit to Shenzhen since we have lived in Macau and it is a modern city of 10 million people which has evolved since becoming a Special Economic Zone in the late 1980s; prior to that it was a sleepy fishing village.
This time we went to the Russian Aircraft Carrier Minsk, which has been moored on the river front and is a theme park. The carrier is decommissioned but still has all the missiles, torpedoes, big and little guns and all the shells to match. You can crawl pretty much all over it. It had jump jets and attack helicopters and so there are a few of these on the flight deck also. It was rather interesting and I was grateful that 95% of the signage was in chinese and Rich would still be there reading it all! He absolutely loved it. He claimed it was retribution for dragging him shopping. There was a couple of shows on the carrier - one was russian folk dancing and the other was precision marching with rifles. An interesting mix!
We also went to Happy Valley - a theme park with rides. The rides were fun and the main feature seems to be to get very wet. For 1 YUAN coin you can use a coin operated water cannon which feature on most rides to shoot unsuspecting members of the public - usually not your friends and it was lots of fun to get the westerners! The chinese take it in good spirits.
We caught the ferry from Shenzhen directly back to Macau which was much easier than going via HK and it made for a terrific Easter holiday.
