It is almost overwhelming! Almost 5,000 hosts 110 countries, and 2 hosts from CUBA have gathered here. (Dis you know that now there are 2500 hosts in Cuba.) One thing that Brian Chesky, one of the founders of B&B said, is that we exist to enrich the communities in which we live. I wrote it down to remind myself when we talk to the city officials in Los Angeles: this is a good phrase to use to counter the argument that people have used that home sharing is bad for our neighborhoods. Hours later, and many breakout sessions attended, and it is my opinion that Airbnb is still in a heavy learning curve for planning conventions. Even with event planners, things are going awry. But on the whole, they are doing a pretty darn good job for their second convention with 5000 people. Tonight Airbnb did something interesting – they had a dinner for attendees who signed up, as part of the convention package, and it was in conjunction with a website called Viz eat. Sort of like Airbnb for food. Hosts sign-up to cook a meal for you in their homes. We had nine people at our particular dinner and our host for the evening was a wonderful woman named Marie who cooked duck breast with a maple vinegar glaze, beautiful potatoes, and a tiramisu with strawberries and raspberries. She said because she lived in London for six years, she started the meal off with cheese and crudités, rather than cheese at the end of the meal as they do in France. We had a very fun and lively group – we happened to have three people who worked for Airbnb (tech-support, legal, and trust/safety), and two people who managed properties, and our host, when she wasn't cooking, was an engineer. We ate, drank, and talked late into the night. A quick cab ride home, up into our apartment, and we passed out.
