Today was another driving day. It wasn't as long as some of our other days though. In the afternoon we stopped at the Dachau concentration camp. It was a very sombre atmosphere. The camp itself is huge. I didn't really think about how big it would be. A lot of the camp has been destroyed, but there are still several buildings that are still intact. There is also a museum that is informative and provides you with a good insight into what life was like for those in the camp. Some of the stories of medical experiments and what went on are horrific. It seems so much more real reading about it all where it once took place. It was very sad. The camp was the first concentration camp in Germany. The gas chambers here were used for individuals and small groups. A lot of physical labour and medical experiments took place here and then people were shipped out to other camps such as Auschwitz. This is where their lives often ended, in the gas chambers. Later on that evening we all headed to a traditional beer hall for dinner. We were also all given a large stein of beer. I ordered a vegetarian dish. It was a mix of sweet potato and cheese with something else in it too, then crumbed. It was served with a delicious sauce and three pieces of broccoli. At the beginning of the evening a guy came around with a vintage camera and took a photo of everyone, individually. Later in the night you were able to purchase a key ring with your photo and a beer opener inserted into the plastic. I really liked it so decided to purchase it. They were only €7 so not too bad for a cheap souvineer. After dinner we headed back to the hostel bar and had a couple of drinks.

Nanna and Poppa So glad the trip is going well. You visited the same Concentration Camp (Dachau) as I did in 1989, it certainly is extremely heartbreaking.I got quite emotional, walking through the gas chamber, with the gas outlets overhead. You will love Liechtenstein, where The Sound of Music, was filmed accross the lake,in that pretty Castle. It is still raining here, hopefully fine for the week-end, as Poppa and I are going down to Auck for an old friend's 90th birthday. We are all well, nothing exciting hapening. Keep well, hope you are feeling a lot better. Heaps of love to you both. Take care.Nanna and Poppa.xx
Mum The concentration camp must have been really interesting even though it was incredibly sad. That is definitely somewhere I would like to visit one day (strangely) I just want to see it for myself, unimaginable dreadful times, so so sad!
