We flew into Dubai on Tuesday at 10am. Both overtired and needing some ZZZZ's we checked into our hotel which was outside the CBD area, about 15 mins by taxi, and after a couple of hours we realised we hadn't exchanged our money for Dirhams - doh! This is where the Dubai heat knocked me for six, don't ever wander around the streets of Dubai at 1pm looking for a currency exchange. They are far and few inbetween unless you are in the city centre. Our problem was that our only form of transport (taxi) only took cash payment so we couldn't even get a taxi to change the money. We instead looked around for about 30 mins and finally found one in a large Woolies-like shopping centre. After this small achievement, we power walked back to our hotel to cool down where I decided to be sick thanks to heat stroke lol good start to day one. Whilst I slept off the over-exhaustion, Matty did the tour of the Burj Kalifa, the world's tallest building.
The next morning we took a half day tour of old Dubai. The highlight being the spice markets and the gold souks. I could not get over how much gold/jewellery these stores contained and there was about 300 of them!! Later on we went to 'The Dubai Mall' which is like Beverly Hills on steriods - if you have money to spend (and I mean lots of disposal cash) then this is your playground - every designer brand you could think of! We also saw the famous Aquarium which was just beautiful. Matty was disappointed as the ice rink/ski area was shut down for maintenance however the water and light show just outside the mall cheered him up haha.
To sum up our Dubai experience, it is OK as a stop over but we wouldn't specifically make this a holiday destination. It's incredibly HOT and HUMID like you wouldn't believe, so much so that even the bus stops are air conditioned! I realise it's the desert but DAMN that is a new kind of heat.
