Up early'ish for a couple of souvenirs from the markets and an attempt to get inside the cathedral - no luck there. So instead a few farewell shots of Florence from the hill-top lookout at Piazzale Michelangelo. Great sights across the river Arno to rooftops of the city. Could also see clearly how steep the walk was we'd done the day before.
Heading away from the city it was a slow journey as the speed limit was only 70 for most of the way. Then we start to climb up into the Appenine Range and through the Muraglione Pass. Very steep with lots of hairpin bends but better than a bland straight motorway! Finally got into Venice late afternoon and found our hotel - The Art Hotel about 20k out from the city in the suburb of Mirano. OK for a reasonable price.
After a short rest we decided to see just how far we could drive into Venice proper. The answer is not very - and when we got to the terminus there was no parking, other than 24 hour, available. Drove back across the bridge/causeway and tried a park and ride (water-bus), but gave up on that idea when we saw that the park was going to close in an hours time. So back to Mirano to try and find somewhere to eat - it was after evening church services and the town centre was packed with locals, eating, drinking and socialising. Eventually got into a very busy ristorrante. Service was terrible - maybe because we weren't locals, and the food very average. Then back to the hotel and a night of being eaten by mozzies.
