Today it was decided to take a trip to Kowloon side across the harbour on the very old ferry. Don't think they have changed the ferries ever. They are still green rust tubs, but do the job perfectly.
No longer is Kowloon a small trade village, it is now a sprawling metropolis of high end expensive shops. Masses of people throng the streets and every 2 or 3 steps were accosted by street pedlars attempting to persuade us to buy anything from clothing to watches and jewellery.
"Nice shirt sir, made very quickly !" "New bag madam?" "Nice watch sir, Rolex!" All perfectly genuine articles of course…………
After walking for what seemed like hours and miles, we found a nice little place for some much needed food and refreshments. Sated, we wandered off again, heading back to the ferry to cross back to the Hong Kong side. Again being accosted at every step, we managed to evade buying any of the promised genuine items.
Back in Hong Kong, we made a visit to the Maritime Museum to get an idea of how the area has grown in history and time. Dee declared us all as over "60" to get the concessionary ticket rates, much to the chagrin of the one member in our little party who actually isn't yet ???!!! Lol….. It was quite impressive and told a lot about the history of Hong Kong, its trade life and involvement with the Royal Navy ! Sadly all has now come to an end !!
After the museum wander round, Trev and Pat decided to head back to the hotel for much needed rest before the evenings activities, while Paul and Dee headed off into Hong Kong "town" ! It must have been school/work coming out time as there were again masses of people, all going in the opposite direction to us, blocking our progress. We passed a small street trader and bought some wonderful 'pop up' cards. Further and further we went into the heart of the town eventually finding the side streets that we were looking for to bring back fond, if ancient, memories for Paul !
We strode around for miles finding all sorts of market stalls selling just about anything you can imagine, eventually buying a peaked cap for "Les" for the princely sum of $35 HK (about £3.50) !! Plenty of side street markets to peruse through…. Dee in her element amongst all of the bric-a-brac shops…
During our walk round we saw hundreds of girls/women sitting on card board boxes in groups.. All with their phones or pads, under umbrellas, chatting away without a care in the world……. It was discovered later that these were actually all domestic staff who, by law, must have a day off each week. Unfortunately because they live where they work they are not allowed to remain on the premises thus they all congregate wherever they can for the day !!! This law obviously works against the wellbeing of the employees……. Dee and Paul then headed back towards the hotel, on foot, not realising actually how far it was, but the walk was pleasant with many things to see and passed quite quickly… Eventually having walked miles we navigated our way back safely ready for the evenings entertainment..
The plan was to hop onto a harbour boat to sail out into the harbour and watch the world famous Symphony Of Light Show !!
