We'll this will be my first entry into my blog and already so much has happened. I've been here a week and this is honestly the first time I have had to start the blog. It has been a really great week of new friends, a new job and a new home. When I arrived last week I really had no idea what to expect. I was taken to some home in the middle of the night and introduced to a bunch of new people who were my roommates for the night. As I looked around at what would be my new home on the drive there, I realized just how different this all would be. All the fences in the neighborhood I live in have razor wire and three gates to get into them. Needless to say it was a shock and all I could think about was, "what have I gotten myself into?"
On my first day here I met up with the 3 other IE3 intern's and we were given a tour of the city ending with the hike that the pictures were from. Cape Town is beautiful! The city sprawls between the ocean and table mountain. Everywhere you look there is a beautiful photo to be taken. It is incredible. The weather has been great as well. It is about 80 degrees and sunny everyday. Even my white skin is starting to tan.
One of the best parts of this city, and especially the neighborhood I'm living in is the people. Everyone is extremely friendly and straightforward. They are very straightforward about who they are and will let you know exactly how the feel. It's great. Besides South African's I've met a ton of Europeans, especially Germans. Needless to say, my first weekend here was a lot of fun. There have been tons of new people who love to party and have a good time.
Work has been great as well. So far we don't have a lot going on, but most business are on Holiday until next Monday, so I'm sure things will pick up soon. In the mean time I have met some amazing people at work. They are really a talented group and I know that I can learn a lot from them, specifically my Boss Hennie.
On my very first day, he took the entire afternoon to take me around the city and shoot the breeze about life. He took me to the waterfront and bought me fresh fish and chips that were some of the best I have ever had. We probably spent 4 hours together and it was great. One of the most caring people I have ever met. On top of this he is extremely knowledgeable and we'll connected in the industry.
We'll that's all for now, I will try to update this as soon as possible and I really need to take more pictures so be looking for those soon.
Cheers,
Eric
