Last day in San Diego and a trip to the zoo is on the agenda. We are hoping the zoo is shady because it is HOT!!!
We arrive lateish, our days have slowly become 10 o'clock starts and midnight finishes so we never seem to arrive anywhere until a few hours after opening....luckily everything is open so late over here that it doesn't really matter. Our first thought is to do the zoo bus tour and figure out where everything is. Another queue...20 minutes.....on the bus, up top in the sun which is hot but so gorgeous!!! The bus shows us most zoo areas so we can now get an idea of where everything is and off we go.
The zoo, apparently world famous is remarkably like Adelaide zoo. Smallish cages, cement fences and a few aviary walk throughs. Bigger overall than Adelaide zoo probably but after visiting Taronga Zoo in Sydney in recent years we wouldn't put it among our favourite spots. The girls loved looking at the animals of course though and it was good to see a few new animals such as Condors, Fossa, capybara and honey Badgers. We went though the hummingbird aviary as this was top on my list of American things to see and not a hummingbird in sight!! Luckily, as we watched the capybara with its baby some hummingbirds decided to fly around in the bushes near us. They are really small and they zipped about eating the nectar from flowers. The best thing we saw at the zoo and they were wild!!!
The strange thing about being at a foreign zoo was the massive importance they placed on the Australian section. Even their front sign features a koala, the bus is called the kangaroo express, and they offer 10 free shows throughout the day named Koalafornia Dreamin' Entertainment, 8 are Australian themed, 1 is a meet an animal session and 1 is Chinese themed. Everywhere we looked were signs advertising their Australian animals. This simply made our visit quicker as we cruised through the Aussie section with a few glances here and there and didn't go to the shows.
We left the zoo before closing - first time this trip.....and headed off to Las Vegas. A long trip but a good chance for the girls to have a sleep in the car. We arrived at about midnight, checked in and fell into bed!! Funny thing was, our GPS sent us on a street parallel to the strip because check in is at the back of the hotel. This street was a totally different type of strip....the kind that Wess wasn't getting anywhere near....lol. That I knew of anyway.....lol.
