We arrived in Melbourne and got the shuttle bus to our hostel. We checked in and had a wander around to find our bearings. We had checked into an all girls floor, which meant we got free champagne every night from 8-9pm, which was pretty good! After we had our drinks, we went out to have some dinner, we hadn't gone shopping and wanted to treat ourselves for a change. We were staying in st Kilda, which is right on the seafront. When we arrived during the day, it seemed pretty quiet but at night it was completely different. There are lots of restuarants and bars, with some really cute little bakeries and cafes. It was a really a nice atmosphere and there were plenty of places you could go.
The next day we asked a reception for the nearest dentist and found there was one right at the end of the street. We walked there and booked an appointment for later that morning. The guy that Candy ended up seeing was the owner of the practice and was from Yorkshire, really friendly and helpful, totally different from the dentist in Cairns! He x-rayed the tooth and did some sensitivity tests on the the teeth around the area it was hurting, he couldn't say for 100% which tooth it was but he was pretty sure which one was the problem, the best option was to dig out the old filling and have a look at what was going on. Dentistry isn't black and white he said, so he wouldn't know exactly was going on until he had a look. If it all looked ok, he would re-fill it and hope that was the end of the problem, it may have been that the previous filling was leaking, causing the pain. If he could see the nerve then it would be a case of root canal, but he couldn't know one way or another until he had a look. Candy booked an appointment to have the filling removed the next day, it was going to be a tense 24 hour wait. If the tooth had to have root canal treatment, it would mean we'd have to go home. Even if Candy had the treatment here, she wouldn't have the funds to carry on the rest of the trip, like we said, who has that sort of extra money when they're travelling just incase something happens with their teeth? But we wouldn't know anything until the next day...
The following day we headed back to the dentists, both anxious as to what the outcome would be. The dentist removed the filling (after giving two injections) and from what he could see, there didn't seem to be any problems, he couldn't see any nerve exposure and it was in his opinion, the best thing to do would be to re-fill and see if that solved the problem. So Candy agreed with his advice and he replaced the filling. When Candy sat up Emma couldn't help but laugh as the whole right side of her face was swollen and her tongue was hanging out at a funny angle - supportive friend! After that, we headed to nearest doctors to make an appointment as Candy's ears and dizziness still hadn't cleared up. It seems nothing will go away! Once we'd made an appointment for the following say we went back to the hostel to chill for the evening, no drinking champers for Candy (especially as most of it would have dribbled out of her mouth!)
The next day we went to the doctors where the doctor prescribed antibiotics, which hopefully will now work and that will solve that problem. After that we went to Coles (like an Asda) to do our food shopping. Armed with our little list we bought food for breakfast and dinner for the rest of the week. We are trying to save the pennies wherever we can! We then headed into the main city via the tram. We got the free city shuttle bus that takes you around all the sites that you can see in Melbourne. That was really helpful as it helped as plan out what we could see and how we could get there. We then headed back to St Kilda for some free champagne and dinner. We met a girl in our room, and the next day we headed back into the city together and done a walk around. It covered lots of little alley ways and arcades, it had a really European feel with it's little cafes and restuarants lining the streets. There was also some really good grafitti artwork on the walls of the alley ways, really funky and colourful, that made for some good pictures!
The plan for the second week of Melbourne is to hire a campervan and spend four days doing The Great Ocean Road. We've wanted to do it from the start and we haven't had a little road trip yet so should be really fun! We'll keep you posted of our adventures on the road, obviously not until after as we won't have access to the internet. So far Melbourne has been really good, it has a different vibe to Sydney, there is lots to do and we're looking forward to exploring further next week...
