So on Monday we went and got our campervan - 'Jucy Lucy' (that's what we named her) the company we hired from are called Jucy so we didn't have to stretch our imaginations very far to get to Lucy. We set off towards the Great Ocean Road armed with maps, looking forward to our road trip! The campervan was an automatic so we didn't have to worry about gears, however we are both used to them so it was weird getting used to having no clutch! They drive on the same side of the road though so it wasn't that difficult to get around, and everything is clearly signposted.
Once we got onto Great Ocean Road, we kept stopping at various lookouts along the way. That was what was really good about having our own car, we could spend as long as we liked and not have to rush back to a coach. The weather was really good, clear blue skies so the views were amazing and the photo's came out really well too! It was so easy to drive to point to point as it is pretty much just one long continuous road, you go through small towns along the way and there are lookout points dotted around everywhere.
One of the highlights was definately the Twelve Apostles, when you read the information about how they have been formed over millions of years, it makes them even more fascinating to look at. We also stopped at the famous Great Ocean Road sign, something Candy was keenly looking out for from the start of the journey. It was odd as the sign isn't at the start of the road which you would think it would be, which meant we thought we'd missed it. But alas, we came across it in the end!
Another highlight was seeing some wild kangaroos. We were set up for the evening at a campsite in The Grampians (a huge mountain range in Victoria) when Candy spotted a kangaroo eating some across just across a small path from where we were sitting. Then we spotted it's baby Joey sitting near it. After a while there were five of them there, two babies and three adults. It was so amazing to see them that close! They aren't nervous animals at all, they don't mind if you get really close to them, so we got some really great photo's of them too. There ended up being about fifteen of them around the campsite, one Joey was eating some grass across from it's mum when all of a sudden it made some sort of cry sound and when it's mum came hopping over, the Joey jumped straight into her pouch. It was so sweet! It was calling for it's mum so she would come get pick it up, really lovely to see and something that we would never get to see at a zoo. Really was one of the best parts of the whole trip!
The last few days in Australia really made up for some of the problems we had throughout the trip. We didn't get to see or do everything we wanted and that was obviously a huge disappointment. However, Great Ocean Road made up for some of it. It was just really good to be able to drive from place to place and see some amazing sights, just by chance. Australia wasn't what either of us thought it would be, but we still had a great time, especially towards the end.
We are now off to the airport, we're staying there overnight to save some money on acommodation - we are definately true backpackers now! Next stop is New Zealand which we are both really excited about, we'll keep you posted on the adventures!
