Zimbabwe- Harare
We had to drive through Mozambique to get to Zimbabwe, but we didn't do anything here just drove straight through. On our first day in Zimbabwe we went to some ancient ruins, a guide took us round it was really interesting and he made us do role play- very entertaining and John made a mighty fine chief!
Hostel-Part 3
We then drove to Harare (the capital city) to find somewhere to stay- the hostel we went to was no longer open as tourism is so bad in Zim now nobody had stayed there for months and it didn't have a licence any more, after some serious negotiations we talked them into letting us use it. It was crazy, it had no electricity for most of the night and although it was very nice it was creepy without guests or staff- it felt like a setup for a good horror film! But we had such a laugh running round the place.
We cooked tea in this little shelter outside and two of the neighbours joined us for a carbonara that was absolutely minging! Absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it was our cooking groups turn. It was raining really heavily so we had to leave the truck on the other side of the river as it was likely to flood, we had to keep dashing back and forth over the river to get cooking stuff. Our waterproofs came in very handy that night! As we were leaving we found out that a massive python lives in it and has eaten the owners dog and a goose- I'm sure we wouldn't have been running over it in the dark if we had know this before hand! We spent the rest of the evening playing pool in these war masks that were supposed to be ornaments! All the walls had huge murals of animals on, it was a very surreal evening.
The next day we drove to a hill in the top of Harare and looked at the views of the city.We were all really impressed with Zim as the people were the friendliest we had come across and it was the most developed city we had seen in Africa. It is a huge shame about all the goings on there as you can see it was a successful country. People speak openly about the problems but are still very proud and positive about the country. We were then heading to Antelope Park to walk with the lions!!!
