When we left Boracay, Dan left us for a couple of days to go to his cousins wedding in Naga City. We headed to Cebu City with no idea of what to do for a couple of days.
We asked the taxi driver to drop us somewhere central and he dropped us outside Pizza Hut. Perfect!! This was somewhere to eat, gather our thoughts, and find accommodation using their wifi.
As we sat down, Dave realised he had left his phone in the taxi.......not only was the taxi driver gone and we had no details for him but we got dropped in the street with no destination so if he found it, he wouldn't be able to find us.
After checking into a hotel, we walked around the local area. It was quite a nice area but there were a lot of kids begging and we had to keep an eye on ours pockets. This is where we learnt a couple more phrases:
Dilly - No
Para - Stop
That evening we found a hidden shopping mall, had a walk around, and popped into the arcade. Albert and I took on some zombies but couldn't quite save the world. Sorry.
We headed back to the hotel bar and had a few chilled beers over some cards. The bar had karaoke and the locals rotated all night - my personal favourite was definitely the Filipino version of Gangnam Style. He was so horrific that he was great.
The next morning we moved to a cheaper, more backpacker style hostel, called Tr3ats. Walking around, Albert gave one of the begging kids some spare change and we watched as this kid took it straight to an adult about 5m away and she was then sent back out again to get more. Not the nicest thing to see.
For lunch we headed to the food court inside the hidden mall. This is where Dave lost the game and had to down a sweetcorn shake. It tasted horrific. We also tried a small plate of lechon between us. This is where a whole pig is spit roasted and its just a big pile of pork with crackling - delicious!
That afternoon, we chilled on the roof of our hostel and had a few beers, before heading out for a proper lechon meal. 3kg of pork between 7 of us! After food, we headed for some cocktails and then on to a club at a place called Mango Square.
As we walked in to the bar, we realised that there were no other backpackers there. We were the only white people. Rosella got a lot of attention for being the hottest white girl in the club (and as Ed pointed out the ugliest white girl too).
Due to the fact she was white, Rosella was taken up to meet the DJ. Free drinks and lots of attention. Well at least she didn't let it go to her head too much. After a couple of hours, we squeezed her inflated ego out of the door and headed back.
The next day we decided to have a walk around Cebu and see what was on offer. Throughout the day we came up with lots of challenges to keep the day interesting. If somebody shouted a challenge out then the last person to put their finger on their nose had to do it.
We walked around a basilica and then a fort. Whilst walking around the best challenges completed were Dave and Andy dancing with some local children, Albert drinking a sweetcorn shake, and Ed joining some locals for a photo.
My personal favourite led to us gaining a new member of the group. Rosella shouted, "Who is going to buy a balloon?" Ed lost and chose a butterfly balloon. He then followed this up with, "Who is going to carry the balloon for the day?" Andy lost. So for the rest of the day Andy had to carry the butterfly balloon, who he has since named Daisy.
That evening Daisy became the responsibility of Rosella. We went back to the mall and grabbed some food. Daisy wasn't allowed in by security so Rosella left her with the security guard. As we exited the mall, that exit was closed and there was no security guard or Daisy. Rosella had shown just what sort of mother she would be in the future and had lost her. As we walked around the mall, we heard Rosella scream and watched as she ran off. She had spotted Daisy at the main entrance! Unbelievable! We had made her last almost a whole 24 hours!
Before heading back to meet Dan at the hostel, we headed to have a look at the SkyWalk at the top of the Crown Regency hotel. A platform at the 39th floor that you could walk around on. We decided that we would do it when we returned to Cebu next week and so headed to find Dan.
Before we left the hotel, I thought i had spotted something a bit nuts. I thought I had seen a tiger walk through the lobby. Surely not! But we were in Asia! We went to have a look and yes, there was a tiger being led through the lobby. Crazy!
We had a chilled night with Dan and this morning we are heading to Oslob for the day to swim with whale sharks!
