The last you heard from me, I was on an overnight train headed to the islands. I've never been on an overnight train and it was a really cool experience. They come around and put tables up for you and your "roommate" to eat dinner on, and then, when you were ready, they come around and turned the small space into bunk beds. I was a bit worried about motion sickness, so my bunk mate offered to take the top bed. I slept just fine, although it was slightly rocky, and around 4am, Willie came around to wake us up, as we were arriving at our stop. From there, we took a bus to the ferry stop, and boarded the 7 am ferry to Koh Phangan. I had put a motion sickness patch on to help with sea sickness and it made me sleep the entire ferry ride, and when I woke up, we had arrived in paradise. Our last journey was an hour drive in a pick up truck to the other side of the island, where we were staying. We were staying at a beach called Bottle Beach, in the north east part of the island. Let's just say, the roads there were not very well developed and at the end of our route, we had the scariest hills I have ever been on. I was thankful to arrive and get out of the truck. In total, we had traveled around 14-15 hours to get there!
Our accommodation there were these adorable bungalows, steps from the beach (see photos). This time, we only had cold showers (no hot water) but we cherished it because of the heat. Also, wifi cost money and was pretty pricey which is why I've been MIA. Anyway; after getting there, most of us immediately went towards the beach and spent the day relaxing, taking in the sites, and getting our tan on. Around 5, a huge storm rolled in, soaking my roommate Rachel and I as we ran back to the bungalow. It was good timing because we needed to clean up and get ready for the highly anticipated black moon party. Koh Phangan is known for its moon parties, whether they be full moon, half moon, no moon, etc. Tourists from everywhere come to participate in these parties.
The rain kept pouring down for hours. Our tour guide was not exactly keen on us deciding to continue on to the party, but it's a once in a life time opportunity, so those of us that were going had no hesitancy. The unfortunate part, we were only taking one truck, so 6 of us had to sit in the back of the truck, getting soaked the entire 40 min drive there, and yes, I was one of them. Those of us in the back used plastic bags to cover our heads (see photos). Yolo!
The party was so much fun. Unlike the full moon party that's on the beach, this moon party was on the top of the magic/mushroom/mellow mountain (all names are used interchangeably). We all were painted with neon paint, and had glow in the dark flower headbands. We figured we might as well go all out! We danced and of course had a few + drinks throughout the night and morning until 5 am when we were covered in mud and our driver came back to grab us. Such a great experience, I wish I could do it all over again.. And again.. And again!
Even though we went to bed at 6am, the next day we spent entirely on the beach, getting up at 10 and relaxing/recovering from our amazing evening. The beach is extremely secluded (only 3 hotels) and offers some of the most amazing views I've ever seen. That night, we walked down the beach and had dinner at a different restaurant and hopped back and forth between the three bars until we were exhausted and headed to bed.
I love to death Koh Phangan and the hotel we stayed at. The staff was SO fun, making sure we had the time of our lives. I'll truly miss them! If you ever get a chance. GO!!
Today we took the ferry from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui to soak up more sun and find more adventures.
FYI.. koh in thai means "island"
I'm am loving island life. I never want to leave!
