18th - 19th September 2008: We´re spending one night in a small town caled Huanchaco, which is famous for its reed boats called 'caballitos de tortora', which roughly translates as ´little horses made of reeds´. They are all lined up along the beach and the fishermen take them out in the mornings and afternoons, napping on the beach in between. Naledi and I take a walk up to the church on the top of the hill for a view of the town before relaxing with some beers for the evening.
Today we head to the nearby ruins of Chan Chan, which were made by the pre-Inca Chimu tribe. They stretch for mile upon mile but we visit only one settlement, which was impressive and labryinthine (our tour guides favourite word), with many carvings of different animals. Our guide is very excited that we´re from the UK and America, apparently not many tourists make it up to this part of Peru so she wants to take a photo of us and a viedo with us all saying where we´re from! We also take a quick look around the museum before lunch and then three of us decide to go for a ride on the caballito reed boats. We draw quite a crowd as we try to get into the boats without falling into the water! After a quick lap around the bay we end up soaking and decide to go for a quick swim before catching another night bus which will take us to Lima.
