Great nights sleep in my huge bed, followed by a lovely breakfast at a more than respectful hour, who could ask for more!
Today it rained, ALOT! In fact I thought I was back in the UK! We still got lots done though and saw some great sights. Started off driving through Houts Bay, best know for its lobsters, and then continued along the coastline before veering off to Fish Hoek, best know for its fish, no surprises there then. Our destination was Seal island, best known for......I don't need to explain...Unfortunately due to the weather the boat had stopped running. We therefore took a look around the bay (wasn't raining at this point, just very windy), and came across some random old dude who appeared to have trained a couple of seals (I say trained in the loosest of terms, he feeds them fish, so they hang around). When we arrived, the seals were just swimming around watching to see where he would put his bucket down. He did so next to us, and 30 seconds later I had a seal sat next to me, which, no word of a lie, was nearly as big as me (ok, I'll say it first, wasn't that big then, ha ha), did give me a fright though, one minute nothing, next minute huge seal next to me (yes, I do realise this is coming from the same person who is going cage diving with sharks).
Back in the truck to our next stop, Boulders Island, which I was particularly excited about because it's home to a colony of penguins. As if lions, leopards and warthog weren't enough, I can now add penguins to my list! It didn't disappoint, you basically walk through a housing estate onto a walkway. As you walk along you see the odd one here and there, and then you get to the end of the walkway, to be greeted with a whole beach of penguins, just a metre away. Penguins sleeping, penguins keeping eggs warm (to be fair also sleeping but with more responsibility), penguins walking, scratching, ruffling feathers, did I say walking??? Just brilliant, I have videos too, so I can relive the moment again and again. Also pretty amazing that they have grown to a colony of 3000 from just 2 breeding pairs, what a success story :)
We left the penguins to start the journey to the Cape of Good Hope. On arriving, we had two chances of walking around to view the scenery......Bob and No!! In fact it was so windy, as Sue opened the truck door it nearly got lifted off its hinges. Was good to say we'd been to the point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet though (well where most people say they do, other than marine geeks, who know better!!). Last stop was Cape Point, the most Southern tip of Africa (undisputed). Was great viewing, especially the unexpected sight of several ostriches on the beach, looking very wet, and very out of place!!!
The evening was a trip to the local Italian for pizza, which we'd been craving!! Very interesting debate with the waiter who made the mistake of telling us that only women should eat salad. He also continued to inform us that this didn't however include African woman as they are not concerned with being trim. I'd had a couple of glasses of red wine......he was never going to win that one. Went to bed hoping for sunshine.........
Woke up to bright sunshine, hurrah!! Just perfect for our last day as a group to walk up Table Mountain, and what a great walk it was!! Mesh told me it would take 90 minutes at a good pace, so obviously I had to beat this (thought I had got rid of my competitive streak, it seems not), bit naughty, but left the rest of the group in pursuit of my goal of beating an hour and a half. Which I did, in fact took just over an hour. Bloody hard going though, I had been led to believe it was a gentle, but constant climb to the top, no, more like a bloody steep, constant, never ending ascent to the top!!! Caught up with others in the cafe and took the cable car down, views at the top not great (bit like Snowdon, always in fog), but fantastic view of the city after we passed through the clouds. Afternoon was a lovely walk back along the beach, with a stop for lunch and an ice cream for the way home! Perfect end to a great adventure with Sue and Barry!!
Spent the evening watching "Days of our lives" what a bloody awful programme that is, how on earth it has been running for the last million years, I'll never know. Worst bit is, it gets addictive if you watch it for more than 30 minutes (ahh, just answered my own question), early night, up at 3.30am.........for.....neeerrrrnah.......neeerrrrnah........... nernah, nernah, nernah...(in my head that's the theme to Jaws)....
