And now......the end is near.........
Up at 3.30am, whhhhyyyyyyy?????? Ahhhh yes, because I decided it was a good idea jump into a cage to certain death, at the jaws, of well, Jaws!!
Two and a half hours later, we arrived at the marina for breakfast and a briefing (which basically consisted of, keep all limbs inside the cage). The trip out to our anchor point was both exciting and scary, just kept thinking, in a minute, I'm going to see a GREAT WHITE SHARK! Within minutes, someone had seen one, so we very quickly got into wetsuits and the first group got into the cage. Was just looking around thinking how nice it was that the water was actually quite warm, when......DOWN, DOWN, DOWN...(our queue to take a breathe and submerge)..........Well, what can I say, one of the most majestic sights, a Great White shark swimming slowly, calmly, right past the cage........stunning!!!! After this, another 3 came, each one bigger than the last, coming from different angles. They just appear, one minute nothing, the next, 3 metres of pure muscle swim silently past. Actually felt calmer when they were there, just watching them, than waiting for one to come (probably adrenalin, I know). Just after we got out and the next group got in, one got hold of the bait (huge tuna head) which was attached to a bit of rope, and had a tug of war with a crew member. He was right up against the cage, literally banging on it!! Gutted, although I think we got a better view from the boat as afterwards the guys said all they saw was water, and some teeth (in fact 2 people got out straight after, as it scared them so much) I therefore took the opportunity and got back in!!!! No more tug of war, but some more good sightings, I hope some of the pics come out (Kodak disposable wproof camera so not holding out much hope!) Biggest shark 12ft, big enough for me.....
As if that wasn't excitement enough, we had to leave quite quickly as the wind had got a lot stronger so we needed to get back. Clever clogs went up to the top deck with one other bloke, although he took the opportunity 5 mins in to get to the lower deck. I however didn't take that 30 sec window so travelled the 30 minutes (felt like an hour) on the biggest, scariest, wettest roller coaster I have ever been on!!! Why so bad? Well, not only was I being jolted and thrown about, but at any minute I could have fallen off into an ocean with waves as big as the shark (and with sharks in it) On the bright side, when we got back, my hair was dry (for those of you familiar with the film Top Secret, my hair was like the woman as she gets off the motorbike, Zoe, you'll appreciate the picture!) What an unforgettable experience and what beautiful creatures :)
