Woke up early with a huge grin from yesterday! Back also seems to have survived the hammering,
Another long drive today to get to our campsite closer to Capetown, no idea what to expect as neither Shendle or Meshack had been before. Although scenery wasn't up to much, I decided I had enough charging opportunities to play my iPod. First time since coming to Africa, forgotten how nice it is to listen to music on a long journey!!! Finally arrived about 11.30am to what can only be described as the African version of Pontins, and a crap one at that (apologies to anyone who holidays with this particular campsite/family holiday provider, but if a lightening bolt had hit me it would have been more bearable). Just to really twist the knife, it was a 4 day weekend, so was rammed. Kids everywhere, on bikes, in the pool, canoeing on the river, on the swings (which squeaked and were 10ft from our pitch, GBH did come to mind, if only I had had the weapon and a suitable get away plan). To top it all, the bar didn't provide any protection......ahhhhhhhhhhh. Unfortunately nothing we could do but grin (I prefer grimace) and bear it! Only saving grace was the fact they had wifi, so spent a few hours on t'internet. Day picked up when we decided to go for a walk, a few 100 metres outside the camp was quite nice (and peaceful). Topped it off with a few beers at the bar (by this time a lot of people had gone back to their pitches) all in all our experience at the campsite from hell lasted less than 24 hours, but will, I fear, leave a small scar on my otherwise mostly unblemished African adventure!!!!!
The morning brought a welcome escape and the prospect of no more camping!!! Our first stop was Stellenbosch, wine country, hmmmmmm. Now obviously, those who know me, know I don't drink much, and NEVER before 8pm....but when in Rome!!!!! We arrived at 10am to start our wine tasting session, and as described by our host, to really enjoy the wine you need to drink it not spit it out - no arguments there then. First wine was lovely, second really nice, third washhh rather tasty, fourth even, hic, betterrrrrer andthefifththebesssccchhhttofalll, hic!!! Came away with a decent bottle of Merlot for the evening, but really none the wiser on how to taste wine properly!! After the wine we got to take a look round Stellenbosch, a really pretty town with some interesting sculptures (mules head made out of old tyres, a bronze cheetah, and a man that looked like one of those that are normally real, this one wasn't, bit weird as I kept expecting him to open his eyes or say something!!) Also had some great art shops (yes that is me saying art is interesting!!). Nice atmosphere too, a real Sunday morning cafe culture, very laid back. The houses are also really pretty, a lot of old Dutch style properties. Had lunch in a Cuban bar where people were smoking shisha pipes, bit random, but great food! After lunch we drove to Capetown, first sight of it was amazing. Even at first view I can see why people fall in love with the place, old buildings meet new architecture, against a backdrop of ocean and mountains. We arrived at our guest house, which was another lovely surprise. A really quant little B and B called the Sweetest Orange guesthouse. It has recently been renovated by an Austrian couple who have named the rooms (about 10 of them), Sky, dream, stars etc. I wanted Moon, obviously, but was given Sky, although not upset for long, the room is amazing with a King size bed!!
The afternoon was a great opportunity to go for a walk along the seafront. It really is lovely here, glad I'm spending a few days! Our evening meal was at Marcos African bar, what a great place. The menu had all of the African meat you'd expect - crocodile, ostrich, warthog (which Barry had, I shall never forgive him!!) and a band playing African music on drums and huge xylophones. The best part was 2 girls, who sang, played instruments and could put Beyonce to shame the way they shook their booty!!! They also had a guy dancing who did high kicks and back flips!! Great atmosphere, singing, food, wine (from the tasting earlier) and dancing :)
