Emma's Adventure
Hi all,
So, we're finally in Cambodia...! quite a trip...we left Bangkok at 8am yesterday and arrived in Siem Reap at 8:30pm-despite the distance only being about 150km between the two! main reason? Cambodia hasnt heard of tarmac--or at least the majority of the country hasnt. Across the border at Poipet it was pretty horrendous-the place is Mafia run so consists of huge hotels and casinos amidst blatant poverty-it also stinks! we were chivvied about for ages, having to change buses, sit around etc and we eventually left at 3pm in the rickiest bus that left us battered and bruised from the shocking roads. The countryside is pretty awesome-little wooden huts on the side of the track, peole sellling what looks like urine out of old Coke bottles-we're guessing some kind of fuel?, gorgeous little kids running around, waving as we pass-it certainly puts life into perspective! We werent too impressed when we were forced to first stop and have dinner at the guide's 'friend's' restaurant and then later stop and pay little kids to use their toilet! It felt like the Cambodian version of Oz Experience! But we eventually arrived, and not about to be sucked in by the guide trying to get us to stay at his 'friend's' guesthouse, we went off and found our own...The Red Piano-it's very nice!
Tomorrow we plan to spend the day at Angkor...leaving at 5am to catch the sunrise-should be good if we can get up in time! Then we'll head down to Phnom Penh and out to The Killing Fields-all very cultural and highbrow!
Dont know how much detail I gave on Katie last time, but basically her mum flew out on Thursday to check her out of hospital and into an hotel, and they both plan to fly home tomorrow...we await to hear if she'll be returning to us. In the meantime we're still having fun and as much as we miss you all, have no real desires to return home! ha ha!
Keep up the messages-theyve been a bit slack of late!
Lots of love,
Emxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
