Surprised at the lack of aching limbs from the Tongariro Crossing we were up early to head for Wellington. Bruce wasn't feeling so well but a jump start soon got him going and we were on our way.
The skies were grey, rain was iminent so we were pleased we had booked into a hostel for our first major city in New Zealand. Looking forward to not having to cook on a camping stove we headed to what looked like a lovely Thai restaurant. Thirty minutes later Jona was stood in Burger King, the Thai was that bad! A few bars later we found ourselves in a surprisingly busy bar for midnight on a Sunday and after shooters with some locals we somehow ended up sitting with a bride and groom. Where the rest of the wedding party was was anyones guess but after a ten minute chat with the groom (who's favourite topics of conversation included and in order of preference hunting, his car and obedient wives) we copied the bridal party and made ourselves scarce pretty quickly.
Next thing we remember is being in a cab with a guy we had been drinking shooters with heading for his 'batch' in the suburban hills, where we partook in a spot of setting off industrial sized fireworks from his balcony at three in the morning. Doubt the neighbours were impressed!
We took a stroll around the central streets of Wellington on Monday before the rain set in again for the afternoon only venturing out for bangers and mash that evening. The best sausages we've had in months. Almost made up for the Thai the night before.
