Emma's RTW Adventure
After four days I am returning to my poor abandoned journal. I last wrote on Friday, and so much, yet so little, has happened since.
I believe it is a good thing that I have relied less upon my diary as a travelling companion, it means that I am meeting real people and actually living rather than just writing about life... Which can't be a bad thing.
Saturday was great fun. After some pretty boring 'demo lessons' at the school, I made a trip to Danny's Irish Pub at the Sheraton Hotel...
... I realise that it now seems as though I am only doing British things but I promise that isn't the case. I have had four days of very, very Chinese food. It's just that if I write about every time I eat Chinese food here then this will be a very boring journal!...
I arrived at the bar early (during happy hour no less) and sat and read an English newspaper (yaayy!) and my latest book, Travelling With Che Guevara - The Making of a Revolution by Alberto Grenado. Which I cannot recommend highly enough!.. Brilliant book.
After a few beers, the bar began to fill and the fantastic band began to play. At this point I decided to introduce myself to two guys sitting not far from where I was sitting. My opening statement of,
"Do you mind if I sit with you? I promise I'm not a prostitute or a pyschopath",
seemed to break the ice, and soon the three of us were drinking and chatting merrily. They turned out to be Martin (from Broadstairs) and Scott (from Kansas, USA, who just so happened to have been in Ashford the previous week... How strange!?!)
We ended up drinking until three in the morning, and my hangover the next day completely wiped out Sunday morning.
Once I had dragged myself out of bed, I took a taxi (taxi's never cost more than about 50p here) to Fuzi Miao, a beautifully scenic area of Nanjing, and also one of the most touristy.
I wandered the streets and visited a Temple of Confucius, which was worth seeing if not terribly exciting. I toyed with the idea of hiring a paddle dragon boat to float down Qinhuaihe Creek, but decided against it as I'm sure the boats need two people... I didn't want to be 'the foreigner paddling round in circles'... I was already being stared at enough!
Sunday night ended in much the same way as Saturday night, only this time we drank until 5am due to the World Cup final, which didn't start until 2am here!
Then up for seven on Monday morning... Ouch!
The weather has consisted of very hot and humid air mixed with torrential downpours like I've never seen before... Which is why my hair constantly resembles one big fuzzy afro... Not a good look for me! Evil humidity!
Ooh... I also cleaned my yellow and brown kitchen surfaces, cupboards and walls, which turned out to not be brown and yellow at all. They should have been bright white all along. Now... I'm no 'clean freak' but surely someone should have noticed that the kitchen was not exactly spotless!!! Eurgh!
Today has been my most normal day yet. I have made some friends, ordered food and had the right thing arrive, found a dodgy DVD shop and have found a brilliant (if expensive) foreign language book store. Now all I need to do is figure out the Chinese symbols on my TV and DVD player.
That can be my mission for tomorrow!
