I took a day trip with Sarah to Cape Tribulation today - 'where the rainforest meets the sea' in the Daintree National Park and Wet Tropics World Heritage area. It was quite expensive, but included a crocodile safari boat trip on the Daintree River; a rainforest walk; lunch; a cable ferry crossing of the Daintree; a visit to the famous Daintree Ice Cream Company; an aboriginal talk and demonstration in the Mossman Gorge and a driving tour of Port Douglas. A very long list indeed, I was feeling rather weary by the end of it!
The Daintree River was too high for spotting crocs really, but luckily we did find one lurking lazily amongst the trees. Apparently they are now used to these tours so it didn't even bat an eyelid - not majorly exciting, but I'd rather it didn't as they're so dangerous! Even in recent years, people have been killed by the crocodiles along there. It was a scenic boat ride anyway - I've never seen so many shades of green and the murky (although clean) water is highly reflective, making the views even prettier.
The beach at Cape Tribulation was pretty cool, with the rainforest stopping just short of the sea leaving a sparkly sandy beach. The sea all along the coast up here is very calm because of the Great Barrier Reef.
The second part of the day was partly ruined by our tour guide going on about Dengue Fever - I had been warned about it at my hostel but she told us all about how awful it is and how it stays with you for life. She said yesterday's group had been swarmed by mosquitoes on the rainforest walk and that we should look out for a particular type that spreads the disease. This made me paranoid and totally unable to relax and enjoy the walk, especially as mosquitoes are apparently now becoming resistant to DEET. Great...
Despite feeling lethargic after such a long day, I went for an evening run along the esplanade, knowing I'd feel better for it. As I reached the far end of the esplanade, a bare footed and bare chested bloke just caught up with me and said: "You're the fastest little thing I've seen, it took me ages to run you down!" Well that was it, just the motivation I needed! I said: "Good!", turned on my heel and bombed it all the way back! I don't know if he was chasing me again but I hope he was!
