Liv woke up with what we presume was food poisoning, so our plans changed. We had intended to go to the Mayan ruins but instead we had a day in organising and resting, after a trip to Starbucks.
I went out for a while by myself into the historic district, to discover that Liv and I had actually covered pretty much everything the day before! I went to some galleries that were now running in some buildings of historical relevance and admired the art, although I couldn't understand the background information considering that I don't speak any Spanish. Mexico City is a really nice city to just walk around, it has so much character and atmosphere and seems to always be filled with people, including street performers and vendors.
I returned to the hostel and started a job search given my pending return to England in less than a week. This was extremely depressing and suddenly it really sank in that my travelling was coming to an end so soon. This without question has been the best year of my life so far and 2015 has brought to me such incredible experiences; I feel so lucky in that respect. It feels like a lifetime ago that I was in Vietnam and Indonesia with all the great people I met, just as it feels like a million years previously that I started university at Leeds and met Liv, who I can now spend every second of every day in the company of with complete ease. This definitely won't be my final time travelling - there are still so many places left to go to!
Late afternoon we left for the airport for our flight to the Caribbean coast of Mexico. It was the most frantic check in and very odd, and after getting some food we boarded the plane. Liv and I pretty much slept through the whole flight, which I briefly remember being fairly turbulent, until we landed in Cancun. The first thing that hit me as I left the plane was the heat - should come home with a great tan, fingers crossed!
We had to get two buses to reach Tulum but it was a pretty easy joint eu and we were outside of our hostel by 2.30 am...... Outside banging and yelling as no one seemed to be there to let us in!! Around 45 minutes of thoroughly embarrassing ourselves with a desperate attempt to wake up someone inside, we gave up hope and began to walk away when the security guard opened the door and said "buenos noches". Just glad to have a bed for the night we went straight to our 8 bed dorm, found out we were the only people inhabiting it, and with it being so damn hot I took the mattress off my bed, placed it on the floor under the fan and slept there in my underwear.
