We got a taxi to the airport at 3.45 am and it cost more than the Costa Rican money we had left. I went to find a cash point to discover that none of them would dispense money until 5 am. Stuck with what to do I remembered that I had a £20 note in my purse (the equivalent to what it had cost), and the reaction I got from the taxi driver when I handed that over was hilarious. I had never ever seen one man look so happy or excited - I may have made that the best day of his life! He held up the pounds with disbelief, smiled a huge toothy grin and giggled like a little girl saying that yes, he would accept that. So funny; being British has its perks.
Just before we boarded our flight Liv and I found a Britt coffee shop and discovered that it had free coffee on offer to taste, and also dishes and dishes of free chocolate. You would have thought we hadn't eaten for weeks by the way we were loading chocolates into our hands, even though they were melting before we could eat them! I had a strike of genius and we started to fill up the coffee cups with the free treats. We must have looked like such desperate tramps, and I burst into a fit of hysterics as I choked on a nut and watched Liv frantically scoop chocolates out of the dish and into the always overflowing coffee cup. In a sugar coma we both passed out for the entire flight to Mexico.
We arrived in Mexico City and checked into Amigo Hostel right in the historic centre. We went out for a day of touristing, beginning with of course a delicious Mexican meal! We ended up at a rooftop restaurant called El Mayor, overlooking some of the city ruins. I got grilled duck enchiladas in apricot and chilli salsa; I like Mexico.
It was a really lovely day of wandering around the city sights, walking the streets of Mexico City - a city I really really like a lot. The historic centre is a mixture of large plazas, old architectural palaces and cathedrals, market streets, street food stalls and high street shopping! We ended up spending about an hour in Zara trying on a load of clothes - it had been so long since I had done any shopping like that! We both liked so many of the items we tried on but unfortunately we left Zara empty handed due to lack of funds to splurge on fashion items. Something to look forward to when I'm home with a job! We returned to the hostel and had a quiet night accompanied by a dinner of porridge.
