We left early with a driver to see some of Lombok and the scenery it has to offer. Once again the drive along the coast and through the mountains was just absolutely breathtaking. So many tropical trees and creatures in a vast backdrop of bright green jungle with tiered rice terraces within view every direction you look in. It's indescribable, the scenery here, this island has it all.
Upon arrival at the first waterfall it wasn't actually the natural beauty that plastered a smile across my face, but the view of hundred of happy Indonesian locals, of all ages from babies to cute elderly people, all fully clothed and completely drenched from standing under the waterfalls! They were beautiful and looked as it water was being poured from the heavens as it was two narrow showers of water falling from between the trees and rocks above. The locals here believe this water has medicinal properties as it is so so fresh and so it brings them a ridiculous amount of joy and happiness to splash around in them; they also say it's a natural massage as the pressure of the water is so strong so they all stand bent over at 90 degrees and let their backs take a beating!
Hayley and I got right in there with the locals who laughed with us and loved our company - showing us the ways of their magical waterfalls, and I endured the painful yet somewhat refreshing "natural massage" with a super cute local lady who was the smiliest woman I have ever seen. It is truly lovely to see an entire community so deeply happy from something so natural and simple, and beautiful.
We trekked to the next set of waterfalls which were similar but on a much larger scale with surrounding natural infinity pools, and more happy showering locals! After chatting with a lot of Indonesians who were very interested in where I came from and what I thought of Indonesia, and having another splash in the waterfalls it was time to head back out.
The rest of the afternoon entailed visiting a village and a female weaving community, and a Hindu temple. The highlight of the afternoon for me was once again just driving through such incredible surroundings. At the village I spoke for a while with a young boy who desperately wanted to improve his English and watched the impressive weaving work of the women. I find it shocking that they start this craft at the age of 10 and cannot marry within the village until they master it! What an amazing final day in Lombok, plus we upgraded to a private room for the night and it was pure luxury; what a comfortable final night to end a relaxing stay.
