We left early to do a suspension "hanging" bridges tour of the rainforest canopy. It was noticeably cooler up in the cloud forest and we started a tour which involved 8 suspension bridges and a great tour guide. He pointed out flora and fauna as we walked the trail, and any wildlife that could be spotted in its natural jungle habitat.
It was absolutely amazing feeling like you were essentially up in the trees with the birds, walking at branch level and seeing the rainforest from a complete different perspective. The hanging bridges really were a great way to experience the canopy and it was a thoroughly enjoyable walk. Nature is so beautiful and so interesting too; this trail felt like the jungle trek we never got to do! The bridges got longer and higher above the earth as the trail went on, and the higher we went into the canopy and clouds the more awestruck I became with the rainforest.
As the tour drew to a close we were able to fly on a Tarzan swing which was incredible! I literally put my foot into a loop of rope that dangled from a tall tree high above, the guide gave me push and off I went swinging through the trees high in the canopy. It was a wonderful morning.
Back in Monteverde we made some lunch and then went straight to the bus station to ensure that this time we got on the bus back to San Jose. The situation was ludicrous! After queuing for 20 minutes (despite arriving over and hour before the bus was due) the ticket last announced that the bus was full and all other tickets would have to be bought on the bus. The crowds of backpackers who had been unsuccessful in obtaining a ticket began to build and by the next hour we knew there were far too many people to fit on the bus standing! When the bus arrived, so did the police, and as people with tickets were let onto the coach everyone without onewas instantly in an unspoken competition for a place! The police were no way letting more on than the number of seats and we started to lose hope that we would be getting back in time for our flight to Mexico. It was all so confusing as another bus pulled up and English speaking people rumoured that it was also going to San Jose due to the overload of people. All of a sudden the ticket office reopened and they started selling more tickets, just as a third bus showed up - it was complete pandemonium!
We got on a bus in the end and secured seats next to some very friendly Israeli guys who we chatted to for the whole journey back. It was much more pleasant than the way there. We just could not understand why they didn't say there were multiple buses coming and that everyone would get on one. Silly Costa Rica, what a stupid system. We checked into Castle Tam hostel and the Israeli guys joined us. All Liv and I did for that evening was a long walk to the supermarket, make some dinner and go to bed ready for our 3 am departure the following day.
