Byron Bay is a pretty little town with nice little streets and beaches. On my first day I wandered round the shops then intended to walk up to the Lighthouse. I got so far though and decided I'd leave it for another day, so walked back to town along the beach and then back to the hostel to read a lot.
The next day I'd booked a day trip to Nimbin, a hippie town about an hour and a half away from Byron. I got picked up just after 10 by this guy with long straggly hair and a massive beard. The mini bus we were in was an absolute shed and, by the sounds of the engine, I half expected it to just shudder to a halt half way up a hill. We got to Nimbin in time for dinner and had around an hour and a half there. It's only a small town, with just one main street with old hippies and stoners sitting outside random, colourful shops. Nimbin museum was even weirder, just a few different rooms crammed with the most random things ever! Once back on the bus we went to 'Paul Recher's Hippy Heaven'. Paul Recher is this very strange American guy who's planted loads of trees and exotic plants and lives in the middle in this little house beside a lake. It was all very strange; in fact, the whole day was just bizarre. On the way back to Byron, we stopped off to see Minyon Falls then I was dropped off back at my hostel around 6ish.
Lucie and Frankie from Brisbane were down in Byron for a couple of days, so the next day I met up with them and we had a whole day of walking to the lighthouse through what felt like, a never ending wooded path. Once up there the views of the beach and over the bay were really nice and we also got to see the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. We got ice creams and sat eating them then made our way back down to town so they could catch their bus back to Brisbane.
I didn't really do anything on my last day. Had another wander round town, read a lot, drank tea... then the next day the weather was awful. Woke up to the rain and hoped it would stop before I had to go to the bus stop to catch my next bus to Surfs Camp. Thankfully it did, although it was grey and cloudy for the rest of the day.
Surfs Camp is a stopover on the OzExperience bus where we get a surf lesson courtesy of Mojo Surf. Surfing was probably the last thing I wanted to do at the time, but once we were in our wetsuits and down on the beach trying to stand up it was quite fun. Once we got in the sea it was a lot harder and I think I was the only person who didn't even manage to stand up for a second let alone any longer! It was so tiring as well so it was early to bed that night for another early morning the next day to get the bus on to Coffs Harbour at 7am.
