We left Sydney just after 7am and arrived for our mini tour of Australia's capital, Canberra, around lunch time. First of all, we went up to a lookout where you could see over the whole city then we drove round the different Embassies. We then went on a tour of Parliament House which was good, and free! After getting some lunch we drove for the rest of the day up to the Alpine Regions and stayed the night at a ski resort in Thredbo. It was only the first day of the ski season so they were expecting their first big snowfall anytime. It was FREEZING!
The next morning there was an optional hike up to the top of Mt Koscicuzko where there was some snow because of the altitude. When we got up, however, it was pouring down so I, and a few others, opted out. We left Thredbo around 11am and made our way down to Jindabyne for lunch where it was much warmer. We then drove for the rest of the afternoon along the Barry Way, an old disused cattle track that winds down a valley and follows the Snowy River. It was very bumpy and sometimes we were so close to the edge I'm surprised we didn't fall off! That night we spent in Lakes Entrance. We were supposed to have a bonfire on 90 Mile Beach but it was raining when we got there so we couldn't.
It was a really early morning the next day and we were away by 7am. We made our way down to Wilson's Promontory and went on a 'Wildlife Walk' in the pouring rain. It was pretty depressing but we managed to see loads of kangaroos. Once back on the bus there was another optional walk along the beach to try and spot whales and seals. The majority of us opted out again because of the weather and the people who did go, didn't see anything anyway!
The rest of the day was spent driving to Melbourne and we finally arrived early evening. It's a shame the weather had been so rubbish as I'd have been more up for doing the walks etc if it had just been fine!
