I love it up here! On the five hour bus ride from Kuala Lumpur, we spent a good hour just driving up these really windy roads cut into the side of a mountain, then all of a sudden we were in Tanah Rata, the main town in the Cameron Highlands. It's only one street, which has shops and many, MANY Indian restaurants as well as a Starbucks. It really is true that they have a Starbucks everywhere! With it being so high up here the weather's more like back home. It's quite cool and it rains a lot, although it hasn't done for the past two days. It's a nice change from the heat and humidity of the cities though but it does get pretty cold at night.
Most of the land up here is used for the tea plantations and the scenery is amazing. The tea is also pretty good so it's nice to be able to sit with my book and a brew when the rain starts. On my second day here, I went on a tour to the Mossy Forest and to the Boh Tea Factory. While we were trekking through the forest the guide was showing us all the wild plants that we could use if we were to get lost, like citronella, tiger balm and ginger. It was really interesting and he also told us how we could work out if a plant was OK to eat should we get desperate. A handy thing to know! At the tea factory we were shown what happens to the tea leaves after they're picked, then we went to the cafe and had some Palas Supreme (an extra special, hand picked tea) and a scone. How very British!
Apart from a visit to the tea plantations, there isn't really much else to do up here. I like that though, it's nice to just chill out and potter around doing not very much. I went on a jungle walk to Robinson's Waterfall yesterday which was nice and every night we've been going for an Indian. I've practically been living off Masala Thosai's and for 70p you can't really complain! The food is so cheap up here it's insane.
Today I went back to the Tea Factory and had a Teacino, like a Cappuccino only with tea, not coffee, in the cafe and then went to a Butterfly Garden which was a bit random. I've spent five nights up here which is a lot longer than most people, but I've really enjoyed it. Tomorrow I'm getting a bus down to Singapore which I'm hoping will be a lot less stressful than my bus from Thailand to Kuala Lumpur! We shall wait and see...
