After one night ferry, two mini-vans, one coach, a border crossing and twenty six hours travelling, I finally made it to Kuala Lumpur! I'd already booked my accommodation, so I jumped in a taxi and went straight there to sleep. The dorm I was staying in didn't have any windows so in the morning when I woke up I thought it must still be really early as it wasn't even light yet, so promptly fell back asleep. I then woke up a few hours later, looked at my watch and found it was after 11:30am!
My first day was spent getting my bearings. Me and another girl from the hostel went in search of the bus station to get tickets for our next destinations. We found a stall down an alley near the hostel selling the most amazing chicken rice for less than a pound! We went to a few malls and in one of them is an actual theme park! We didn't go in though as it cost a bit too much, but it was funny seeing a big roller coaster in a shopping mall.
The next day a few of us went to Sunway Lagoon, a big shopping complex, water park and theme park. The rides were pretty tame but it was a good laugh, then we went shopping and I was seduced by the fact there was a Topshop.
The next morning we were supposed to get up early to go and get free tickets for the Petronas Towers Skybridge. They give out 800 free tickets everyday between 8:30am and 10am but as soon as I'd got up and got ready it started pouring down, and didn't stop for a good few hours. Once Chris, one of the lads I'd met, got up, I took advantage of the free WiFi in the hostel and used his laptop to catch up on Hollyoaks. He then went to meet some friends off the bus, and after they'd got back and sorted themselves out we went to the KL Tower, the fifth highest communication tower in the world. I was only person who actually went up to the observation deck as everyone else thought it was a bit expensive. The view wasn't that great, made even worse by how cloudy it was because of the earlier rain.
After that we got the monorail to Chinatown, the home of all things knock-off. It was mental! So many stalls selling everything you could imagine, all fake though obviously. We also went to Central Market, and went to the Fish Spa where the fish nibble the dead skin off your feet. It tickled like mad, but then I got used to it and it felt quite nice. After making it back up to where we were staying we went for something to eat. I can't believe how cheap the food is in Malaysia. A big plate of sweet and sour chicken with rice is just over a pound!
Chris and Tom were leaving the next day so Daryl, Rich, Pete and I, got up early to say bye and attempt the Petronas Towers again. We managed to get tickets for 1pm this time so after another trip back to Chinatown, it wasn't as busy with it being before lunchtime, and a proper look round Central Market, we went back to the Towers. The Skybridge isn't even that high up but it's the "highest two storey skybridge in the world". You got a good view of KLCC park and of the public bank ,and it was free so it didn't really matter. After another trip to the bus station we went back to the hostel and watched the film Taken. Mum's watched it while I've been away and text me afterwards to say that I had to be in touch everyday. Now I know why!
Daryl, Rich and Pete left that night so the next day I decided to get on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus to see all the sights I hadn't already seen. I got off at KL Lake Gardens to go to the Sculpture Park, then on my way back to the bus the storm came. It absolutely POURED down! When the bus eventually came I got on and just stayed on, riding round until I got back to where I started. My sunglasses had broken that morning so, although I could have got some knockoff ones that were everywhere for about two pounds, I wanted ones with an actual UV filter so this warranted yet another trip to Topshop!
A few people I'd spoken to before arriving had said that they found Kuala Lumpur very dirty but I found it was just like any other city. It was easy to get around and not nearly as overwhelming as somewhere like Bangkok. It's a shame it rained so hard on my last day but I still feel like I did a lot during my time there.
