We met Mr. So at half ten this morning to go out for the day, firstly we changed hotels! We are now in a french owned place full of little huts! they are great and there is a pool! Basic but better than we thought! After dumping the rucksacks we headed to the killing fields, which was a great thing to do but a true eye opener to the suffering. There are mass graves of all kinds; 450 in one, 166 beheaded in another and one full of women and their childrens skulls. There is also collection of bones, skulls and clothes in different places yet there are also still remains out in the field!
We stopped at a bakery on the way to Tu Sleung (S-21), the prison where all the victims were held. The place is horrific! we found it very emotional and couldnt understand why someone would do this to their own people, especially children! Some of the photos were of children as young as 2! even babies which when executed would be held by their feet and smashed against a tree! The cells were also very cramped and dingy, the forms of torture were also haunting. We read a bigography of one surviovur and felt sorry as he witnessed his wife being shot, however he then fled whilst they changed cartaridges... LEAVING his child behind who was crying!!!!!!! We no longer felt sorry for him! Apart from this guy we were horrified by the crimes against humantiy and angered that those responsible haven't received their true justice, with one of the senior leaders only getting 35 year jail sentence! disgrace!!
After a little talk with Mr.So we headed to the Royal Palace which we discovered was right by our old hotel!! We payed to go in more than we hoped, but were impressed by the grounds and buildings. The silver Pagoda wasn't as great as we thought but was still a good sight. The monks were smiley as always! Plus outside was a boy selling water who had learnt to say " water" like an american, and he then asked where we were from, his response to us sayng england was , " oo, lovely jubley!!" which made us laugh quite a bit!
Mr. So took us back to our hotel where we discussed price! he didnt want to tell us a price and wanted us to give him what we wanted!! daunted we asked for a ball point figure, he estimated about $20 plus the hotel trips... we loved Mr. So and had taken up 6 hours of his " relaxing day" so we gave him $50 to which he was estactic and beamed at us! he said we had helped his family as he was very quiet at the moment. He said his 2 daughters would be happy! We had a photo with him and he gave us his number then thanked us greatly for being good customers! So sweet!!!
We had dinner by the pool (not cambodian food! Oops) but was very nice! I then headed back to wash my hair and had to share the shower with two baby gekkos! :O Overall though we have had an amazing day with its emotional ups and downs! We couldnt have asked for more!
