Hi Guys.
We arrived in Kununurra late on Thursday evening, after a very long bus journey from Darwin. We checked into the hostel and settled in for a good night's sleep.
Kununurra is a small settlement of "Dust-Eaters" (locals), located in North WA's Outback Region. We had 3 nights here to break up the grueling trek west. We didn't have much planned, but there are a few places of interest around this small town.
We first decided to head to Lilly Creek Lagoon. This massive lagoon is home to an abundance of bird and plant life, and if you keep your eyes peeled, you may even spot a freshwater crocodile. This is a great place to escape the 'tourist track', and chill out. We spent time walking around, and sheltering under humongous trees to escape the punishing heat of the outback, and take in the views across the lagoon to the mountains in the distance.
Next up was Kellys Knob; this is a rocky outcrop above the town. So we headed up for a birds eye view of the town, and into the emptiness beyond. People say that here you get a true feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, but hey, we're used to that now.
The next day we took a walk to Mirima National Park. A little over 2km form our hostel, this has been home to Aboriginal Communities for thousands of years, and is still a sacred site for some, with rituals and ceremonies still being performed. We took ourselves on 2 short hikes in the park, through the sandstone cliffs, catching glimpses of the surrounding scenery through narrow valleys.
We've had a relaxing few days in this small town, and now continue our journey west, with an overnight bus to Broome.
Love Lee & Emma
